Hey.
A month or two ago i decided i needed some adventure in my life. I applied for a position in my company in hong kong, and got accepted. I currently live in LA and found a school that can teach me cantonese. I enrolled for a class that starts in November (Im moving in April, Im so glad that I could find a class that starts so soon) But i have one main question. How hard/ expensive would it be to live in Guangzhou and daily commute to HK? Guangzhou seems much cheaper, and its seems to be more traditional chinese city. How realisitc would that be?

Not realistic.

You may consider living in Shenzhen though.

A one way ticket from Shenzhen to HK is HK$36.50 according to this article.

That equates to $0.13 USD. 1 day passes are HK$55.

Hong Kong MTR Tickets and Fares

That's one dirt cheap commute.

Guangzhou to HK daily commute would be pretty bad. You are looking at a very minimum of about two hours each way if both where you live in Guangzhou and where you work in Hong Kong are really close to the respective train stations. However, that's probably unlikely to be the case.

Since it seems like you aren't so familiar with the region, I think it makes a lot more sense to not cut corners right now while you're just getting into a new place where you have to live. It also seems like it's sort of a waste of an opportunity if you have to do four hours in transit rather than just exploring Hong Kong which has plenty of interesting nooks and crannies.

I have visited Guangzhou and HK many times, you would want to live in HK for many reasons. One of them is the safety aspect.

I used to live in Shenzhen and HK. The commute into HK takes way longer than you know, and even longer from somewhere in Guangzhou.

Of the many problems you may face:
1. It takes an hour by rail from SZ.
2. You will need a special visa (multiple entry visa) to be able to go back and forth.
3. Since you are moving between 2 different countries (effectively they still are), you will be stopped to have ur visa checked which takes aother half hour.
4. They use different currencies and generally do not accept the other nation's currency.

Also crime is way less of an issue in HK.

Id go with HK. Commute's really a *****.

Mandarin will take you a long way, so don't waste time with Cantonese(eventhough HK is full of it).
