Japan's self defense force has the strongest Asian military outside of China and Russia and it has the muscle and machines to pulverize South Korea especially in terms of air and naval power. Another thing people take for granted is its industrial might which can be converted to military use in times of war. Japan didn't enter the Cold War hiding behind America's protection.

I honestly would not be surprised at all if Japan became the first country to develop "mecha" machines for its military like in the movie Avatar. Given just how technologically advanced Japan is, if they were allowed to, they would definitely have a military with the same, or better, technological capability than the US. Like I said before, don't let the fact that the national symbol of modern Japan is Hello Kitty distract you. Maybe that's what they want all of us to think....

I know which angle you're approaching it from, now. You're assuming that Article 9 will never be repealed. If it was, they still wouldn't build up. That seems to be your rationale, from what I can see.
I know western media try to portray China as an ambitious bully etc. However, people need to know China has never attacked Japan in 4000 years of history, although China was light years stronger than Japan; but Japan attacked China twice in recent history.
The only "countries" China "invaded" in recent history were Tibet and Xinjiang, which had complicated relations with China to begin with.
China never had the interest to expand. Their ships reached Africa in Ming dynasty only to bring back some strange animals. That's it.

Well the Yuan/Mongols attempted to invade Japan, but were thwarted by a typhoon, the kamikaze or 'divine wind.' There was also a half-hearted attempt to invade Vietnam in 1979 (of course long history between those two).

There was the Himalayas and Gobi desert to the west, desolate steppes to the north full of 'Barbarians'...so they invaded Vietnam. Peoples from China settled SEA though like the Dai/Thai.

Mongols don't count. They invaded almost every place including China.
IN 1979, China attacked Vietnam mainly to please the US. There was no intention to occupy any land.

China did not really want Vietnam. As long as Vietnam followed Confucianism (and they did), China did not care.
As long as a country follows western democracy, the US does not care either.
China has shown a willingness to exert more than "soft" power in the recent history. They have a long history of conquest then retreat to exact juicy deals, as a sort of way to say "hey, we want our way, but we don't want too many of our people killed." At the same time, millions of chinese were killed in the Korean War and attacked in human waves until literally the allies had to retreat because they ran out of ammo. Same thing happened in Vietnam. Chinese special forces and government would literally throw civilians into battle just to blunt an attack.
Today, I don't think they could get away with that, but don't underestimate the ability for a government to do stupid things to stay in power.

Please the US? I thought it was because they were allies of the Khmer Rouge and it was to 'teach the Vietnamese a lesson' for invading Cambodia.
