Just seeking opinions, do you think there is heavy discrimination against aged people in Asia ?
In Singapore now that our ex leader Lee Kwan Yew is old, people do not care about what he says and his view much..and you can see harsh words from netizens on FB.
In showbiz, Korea idol groups are all young.. Only a few rare exceptions like PSY and Cho Yong Pil do reasonably well..
In Malaysia, see online netizens bashing Mahatair saying he is old and should not make so much comments..Of course these may be just haters, but they use nothing but age as a form of attack.
Just want input from members, are aged people discriminated heavily in Asia ?
In Japan, are the young more valued than the old ?

In the Philippines it is very difficult if not near impossible for older people to get jobs, so at least in that country there is a serious case of discrimination against anyone even over 30.

In indonesia you will find sexism too, i think its about the same here because of the relatively large number of young people, its harder for anyone aged above 35 to get a job. In developed country who had a relatively low birth rate you will see old people seeing their pension age rising.

Korea - not at all. We are a society based on Confucianism.
We very much respect our elders, and our language and daily life reflects this.
Korean idol groups are young.. because they are idols. We have loads of singers that are older and very popuar within the country, but clearly not known outside of our borders.
People seem to forget that K-pop idols are just idols, to Koreans too. Young kids who are pretty to look at who can fairly sing and dance -- targeted for the younger market. We have tons of singers besides Psy and Cho Young pil that are very popular. If you are interested, you should take a listen to K-Will, Lena Park, Park Hyo Shin, Baek Ji Young, Rumble Fish, JAURIM, NAUL, NELL just to name a few. They all have very, very powerful vocals and can outsing any western artist.
Here's a link to Jaurim's song Icarus. The main vocal Kim Yoon Ah is 40 years old and very well respected within our country.

I cant say much for Koreans, but some of the respect can be pretty superfical..
you may take care of the needs and ensure their comfort and welfare etc, but at the end of the day, do you give them equal employment opportunity ?
Do you treat their views and opinions with respect ?
I cannot say for other places, but in Singapore, yes we give seats to the elderly , raise funds for them etc, but they are still discriminated when it comes to employment opportunities..
And their voices are not heard if at all...Their ways and method of doing things are labeled as old fashioned, passe etc
In developing countries of Asia, middle age & older people are greatly discriminated for job recruitments. Young people are very plentiful in developing countries.
Not so in Korea.
Maybe if you watch one episode of a random K drama you will see how much we respct older people. It's not just superficial, we think we can learn from anybody who has been on the earth a bit longer than us.
We even address /treat people who are just one year older differently and interact with them differently than our peers.
Umemployment is a bigger problem in Korea for the youth than older people, who mostly have had lifelong jobs.
But our unemplyment rate is around 3% and is fairly low anyway.
It's funny because I think of asian cultures having a greater respect for the elderly than in the west. Maybe because they have to, you see a lot more older people working and contributing to society, whereas old people here and hidden and isolated, reminders of something we prefer to ignore.
As for Asia, maybe it's western biases that are partly responsible for this? Singapore in particular. The government doesn't seem to want to take care of senior citizens either, using confucian family values as an excuse. I think things like being discriminated against in employment happen everywhere. Consumerism and materialism, as well as capitalism, worship youth and vitality.
