Which is the world biggest metro area? Tokyo, NYC, Shanghai? It should be pearl river delta area, a continuous urban area covering HK, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Macau. The land area is about 24000 KM2, less than the NYC metro, of the similar density as the Tokyo metro. The total population is more than 50 million. The nominal GDP is more than 1 trillion USD. By comparison, NYC metro has 1.3 trillion GDP.

Well HK to Guangzhou is 160 km, and the PRD covers a pretty large area. What if you compared a similar area surrounding say Tokyo or NYC?

No it's not, it's many times the size of the NYC metro, and 26 times the size of Greater London.

The NY metro area figure is extremely liberal. It takes in areas that are farmland etc. And the PRC is 16,000 sq.mi compared to 13,000 sq.mi for the NY metro, so still bigger.

Many poorer mainland Chinese working in Guangdong still have difficulty trying to visit Hong Kong or Macau. Their procedures of application is more complicated than mainland chinese with Guangdong hukou. Those who can get visit have 7 days only compared with 14 days by Indian citizens or 30+days by developed countries' citizens. Some HK people seldom cross the border into Mainland China. Intergration between the SARs and Guangdong is not that strong as some people think.

There is definitely still a palpable difference between the mainland and HK. It and Shenzhen may be next to each other but its not like, say, NYC and NJ across the river.

HK and Macau is not part of the PRD Metropolitan area, isolated by political border, natural boundary (the land border may be connected, but actually the city center of HK and Macau is far from the border and isolated by sea and mountains) as well as the limited flow of people and economy.

True, when you cross the border from China to HK, it goes from development to... trees. For the next ten minutes.

The distance between GZ and HK is still comprised largely of farms, fields, and low-density development like factories with small communities around to support them. It's more like the BosWash corridor shrunken down than the Soxal metroplex, where aside from Camp Pendleton, you basically have uninterrupted development from Santa Clarita to SD.
