They (the experts) have been saying India's free market democracy and huge labor force plus (relative) unity and extreme levels of underdevelopment AND their young educated population are the perfect ingredients for an economic boom same as China.
In the 80s they said it was their moment and then nothing happened, they said it again in the early 2000s and nothing happened, they saying it now but still they have fallen behind Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and a host of other Asian economies.
What is wrong, why are they still so poor with broken buildings and infrastructure projects that don't lift up from the ground?
Statistically they are still incredible rural and in many ways behind where they were under the Mughal dynasty.
India has a lot of potential, but it's bottlenecked by outdated cultural norms that still plagues their society.
The caste system remains a problem despite the fact that it's been outlawed in the country.
Religion and sectarian violence remains in many segments of society.
Then there's the issue with gender as many rural places prefer boys over girls.
If India can solve these cultural boundaries, it may one day match China.
The thing that seems to bring seemingly backward countries into the 21st Century is a growing awareness that other countries and peoples have far more advanced and higher quality lives than they do. This is quite evident in countries where totalitarian regimes, poverty and restrictive exit policies limit the exposure of their people to the outside world.
Segments of India have moved ahead ... They probably outsource more technical services to the rest of the world than any other country. But, the progress of India, like China - is slower because of the enormous, remote populations and land mass.

Actually, China's was a lot faster.For a long time, they had record growth.

Some people will say its democracy buts its actually leadership that held india back. instead of Sardar patel, they had nehru and that was disastrous. Modi just got into power. you need to give him time. You can't expect 60 years of problems to be fixed overnight plus you have pakistan and red china always attacking the country.
India is not a dictatorship when you can bulldoze everything and rule with fear like china.
I think democracy will win in the end. Its the free exchange of ideas that is needed for an innovative economy.
From what I've read, even now India isn't a fully unified country. Not just culturally, linguistically, and religiously, but economically and politically. Shockingly, India still has internal tariffs! That's something the US outlawed in 1787.
Add into that mix a great deal of bureaucracy and corruption. Some of it is being cut back, but a lot remains.
Don't think of India as the Republic of India, but as the European Economic Community circa 1965.
Don't overlook that India still has a huge economy anyway, that recently grew to either 6th or 5th largest in the world. But it takes a gargantuan economy to provide a high quality of life for a single country of 1.3 billion people.

It basically boils down to an extremely capitalistic culture, where people are fine with a 1% who have everything, and the 99% who have nothing, near-zero socioeconomic mobility and no hope of ever developing middle class.
India has been in the top 5 fastest growing economies for a few years now. 7.6% growth in 2016, I consider that strong. India simply has a long long way to climb.
India has all the problems of any other poor country, plus they also have their caste system and various ethnic and religious groups who hate each other.
The reason Hindi is not the sole official language is because many of the minority groups refuse to speak Hindi, so they had to come to a compromise and keep English as a co official national language. India had a plan to eventually stop using English as a national and judicial language, but those plans have been completed halted, and the reason boiled down to ethnic hatred of each other. I’d hardly call that unity. Remove those major huddles and India would be in a much similar position as China. I’d say India is at least 20-30 years behind China and not catching up, but that doesn’t mean India isn’t having massive improvements. All the major cities in India have well developed areas and that’s a really positive sign. Some of that development is finally making its way into some rural areas outside the cities as well.
Another thing that is often overlooked is that China’s rural areas are still very poor, there are probably a hundred million people in China with no running water and probably no electricity, but most Chinese cities are fairly modern.

so Indians shouldn't be looking down on their fellow citizens just because they come frm the lower caste.
even here in the US, some Indians still practice that detested caste system as if they are dealing with their fellow Indians in India
