Squirrels in China live in Greater Khingan Range in the Northeast. They are considered wild lives, but not urban wild lives. In Chinese, squirrel means “pine rats”; they live on cold climate trees like Christmas trees. China has a large cold climate forest area of the size of France near Russia. China is developing national parks with Siberian tigers, Siberian bears and leopards in Khingan Range.
No, Chinese are not meat eaters like white men, and it’s a lot easier to hunt for meat in grocery stores in China than hunting squirrels for meat. There are trade wars and China exports chicken, tilapia and other meats in giant quantities to the US and the world. So, to get to the point of this thread, Chinese do not eat squirrels.
Guangdong people still eat some pretty gross things, but I've never seen anyone eat squirrels. I think what we think of as squirrels in North America perhaps is different to what the OP is stating. Maybe there is something wrong with the translation. I really don't think China or SE Asia has squirrels like the ones in N. America
