I thought I'd just post this because I am rather astonished by the themes explored in SyFy Channel's prequel to Battlestar Galactica, Caprica. The 2nd-half of the 1st season just premiered a few days ago.
It takes 7 or 8 episodes before you realize what's going on. But I am impressed by the graphic nature of religious politicism portrayed on the show. Monotheism vs. Polytheism as a political tool is, I think, wonderfully handled. But the heroic twist is that this is all bound up with hard science.
The treatment leaves the viewer to wonder whether anyone believes anything at all. And for those who do "believe," it leaves open the door that they are being deceived.
Frankly, I don't think I've ever seen a TV show that so honestly portrays religious fanaticism crossed with science. I see several of the episodes paralleling modern religious belief systems. And, if you are aware of Battlestar Galactica's premise, you know where that leads.
For example...Immortality? Yes, this show addresses that as a scientific paradigm. But it also brings in the religious belief that the "One True God" has "deemed" that immortality is in the hands of the "believers."
If you hate the show, that's OK. I'm really interested in hearing from people who have been following this weird series.

I haven't watched Caprica. But I watched the new Battlestar Galactica. While I like the show as a action adventure series. I was really turned off by the religious pretense behind the show.
*****Don't read further if you don't want spoilers to the show*******
1. I was really disappointed that the creators ruined this really cool type of mental connection with Dr. baltar and Caprica six. These mental figments really added intrigue to the show. But at the end of the show these figments turn out to be.....Gaurdian Angels???????...seriously?
2. The whole thing of Starbuck dying then coming back to lead the cylons and the humans back to the "promised land." (our earth) Though knowing a series of numbers. OK I guess that could work. But then at the end she just disappears because for the most part she was just a ghost or as they called her the "harbinger of death". I'm still trying to figure out why she was called this BTW. She did bring death she actually saved the human/cylon races or at least allowed for a amalgamate to happen between them.
Caprica cancelled at mid-season? It certainly looks that way. - TV.com (http://www.tv.com/caprica-cancelled-at-mid-season-it-certainly-looks-that-way./webnews/140774.html - broken link)
Ooops, apparently not. SyFy announced it will return
Watching the episode again, I am still impressed that the show examines the idea that a newly discovered scientific technique is appropriated as a religious belief system by the "Soldiers of The One," the contrarian religious organization. With the goal of usurping power and converting the "unbelievers."
I still maintain that this is a TV show that breaks new ground. I think it's a show that everyone who is interested the dynamics of religious power should see.
