Without written instructions from the deceased, the surviving family makes the determination of what kind funeral to have. I've been to Catholic funerals with a Mass (Mass is optional at Catholic funerals) wherein the deceased were non-believers but the family wanted a Catholic funeral. No priest is going to say "nuh-uh."
The OP is a one-trick pony. Without a trick.
No priest is going to perform a FUNERAL cerimony just for fun of the family and friends..
Do you think that relatives could have lied to the priest by not telling the truth about the latest Hawking convictions?
It could be and in one stroke Hawking's relatives would have made fun of the deceased .... themselves..... and the Church ...

No, He's going to do it because he gets PAID for it.

I'm sure they didn't. I doubt that they went out of their way to remind the priest that Hawking was not a believer, and i doubt that he pressed the point. Hawking's views were well known if he wanted to look on Wiki.

Great satisfaction...
It is a bit of an eyebrow -raiser in view of Hawking's views being well known, but living as you do in Gibraltar, you won't know how the church works here. Few people even now bother to stipulate a secular funeral but just have a standard one with the guy in the nightgown, hymns and scripture -readings even from people whom I know didn't believe a word of it.
It doesn't. The OP is under the mistaken impression that one must be a Christian to have a Christian funeral.
Not true.
Exactly! I've been atheist from the age of 10 but there would be nothing stopping me stipulating in my will that I wanted a Christian funeral... and getting one.
Kind of like the Mormon's baptizing people passed on without their knowledge. Their claim might be "what's the harm?" They'll be prepared either way (Yes, I realize there might be other motives on the part of the Mormon's)...
I'm curious as to what these "other motives" might be. Since we don't count them as being part of our membership numbers, I'm at a loss as to what benefit to us you think we see in this.

I think that you don't know what you are talking about.. you seem to be confused..

There is only one here that is talking through their arse...and it's not me.
