I don't take the bible as fact. I base my spiritual beliefs around my relationship with God. Don't get me wrong, I read the Bible. It has a lot of good advice for life. But why worry about trying to interpret a book when you can just go straight to the source and talk to God about it?
Are you referring to the biblical god or just a god you believe exists?
It is also very attractive to those extremely intelligent and truly knowledgeable enough to evaluate the possibilities for themselves and KNOW it is true.
Funny how people KNOW all sorts of contradictory things to be true, huh?

Maybe one of those will show up on this forum some day.
I just don't get it. I can see how you're open minded though and have some hope. But why do people take the Bible as Fact? Where is the proof? I have asked this question many times. And I never get a pure answer. Instead I just get the run around. I don't like run arounds.
This is almost 2019... I just don't get it.
I never got that either.
I had the privilege of not being introduced to religion at home as a child but only learning of it through friends so from Day One, it always sounded totally made up and silly.
I don't get home anyone can give such high credibility to a book...that some guys wrote.
No. That is what it means to be fallible - as the religious never cease to tell us when they want to dismiss unwelcome science. What being human means is having curiosity and wanting to satisfy it. And being Truly human is not being satisfied with Easy Answers.

We are like twins. (Only difference is I never use the word 'worry'.)
Yes, go to God directly.
Don't you find the ones most into their religion, church or Bible are the least likely to go directly to
God and have the most concepts, rules, and finger-pointing of others? (rhetorical)
Actually, I could also say ...
and exhibit the least demonstration of love to others...at least on this forum?
They are 'dug in' that their belief is the only way and all others are going to hell, a favorite declaration...
but in love, of course!! lol
Why this is, as the op asked...childhood indoctrination is big...it has already burrowed into their subconscious minds, fear burrows deepest. (Can't question and go off the learned path.)
That it suits them comfortably is another. It makes them happy and able to cope with life, so why change? That's what I see.
* if asked...no not the vengeful, Man in the Sky God made up in the Bible....

Not all Christians think that the stories in the Bible were historical. So your assumption is false. I assume that is what you mean by "Bible as Fact".
By the way, you are not going to get much insight in the Atheist forum on your question. All they seem to understand (or care about) is the fundamentalist/literalist view of the Bible. So their view of Christianity is extremely limited. Anything outside of fundamentalism, a small aspect of Christianity, is outside of their interest.

During your cosy one-to-one chats, does he ever tell you why he allows so many African children to die for the want of a glass of clean water?

Yes, we are made of straw.
