Ok guys, I am proud of my little town. They are no longer calling the decorated trees this time of year a Christmas tree. It is now called a “Community Tree”. I am sure this is due to the high number of non christian living in Cary, and an attempt to be fair and politically correct, but just the same it make me want to go put up a Community Tree myself.
Cary, NC is a town of about 250,000 people and a suburb of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and The Research Triangle Park. I would guess half of the citizens are from different cultures, and different religions. It seems to me the Town made a fair and good decision.
Some don’t and the papers and local news has had a few days of news from those who feel offended. Here is a clip from our local paper.
I think it shows how progressive parts of NC have become. We still have the fringe groups burning bibles because they aren’t hard enough, but just down the interstate we have a bastion of liberal population growing with every day.
Wonder if any other areas have dropped the Christmas tree name for something a little less offensive to non christians.
Bleh, I don't see the point. I am atheist, but I'm not at all offended with Christmas being called what it is: Christmas. I see no benefit in changing the name, other than to suit easily offended social parasites. There are plenty more pressing issues that desperately need our attention and energy aside from whether or not our holidays are politically correct. Just MO :\
As an atheist, I like the concept of a 'community tree'. That probably also pleases some of the fundies who regard the Christmas Tree as a pagan tradition (which it is).
