I do not tip for pick up or counter service. In fact, I get kind of irritated when I see a tip jar out at places like that.

If I were the business owner(s), I wouldn't dare set something like that out in my establishment. It's just cheesy.

Like someone else said, my patronage should be enough.

If the food is cold, that is the kitchen's fault, and not the servers. In this case, the server or manager should be informed asap, and the food should be returned and prepared properly.

If server/manager handle this in a prompt and courteous manner, the server's tip should not suffer. Usually the manager will comp your food to make up for your inconvenience, and you should tip on the FULL amount of the bill, meaning, the amount the bill would have been if your meal were not given to you for free.

Not tipping AT ALL just because the food is cold is a no-class move.

The cafeteria situation is tricky -- I go there specifically because it is self-service and I'm more than happy to take care of myself. But times are tough and a little generosity makes the world a better place, so like you, I still do 10%.

By the way, customers should realize that waiters have to pay tax based on 15% of the bill even if the customer stiffs them, because the government presumes that everybody tips. And in most places the waiter has to share the tip with the bartender, the hostess, the busboys, etc.

Sharece Thomas has an interesting and frank discussion of tipping issues on her blog and there are a number of video responses from people in the service industry. (Warning: Don't go there if you are offended by spicy language) http://tinyurl.com/278kx2r (broken link)

I never tip for pick-up service. I use a credit card to pay, and I do feel a little guilty when I put a $0 or a line on the tip portion though. I always wonder if the cashier gets mad when they see that.

It would have been nice if you had warned us about the fact that that dirtbag moons the camera at the end.

She and her friends very likely had their waiter running himself ragged from the moment he approached the table until they were long gone.

Yeah that was interesting. Interesting on how many times she dropped the *f* bomb in a five minute conversation.

You totally discredited any argument against tipping by posting that ghetto link.

BTW, nice. She left a $8.00 tip for $164 bill. That's less than a whopping 5%. Classy.

Oh AND she feels discriminated against.

I feel awkward drawing a slash through the tip line on the credit card slip when I pick up my food, but I'm not sure what the appropriate tip should be if all they did was bag up my food.
I know it is misleading but they all buy the same machines running the same software. Us software people are lazy and decided that some places have it customary to give a tip so why have a different print out for different places. We will just always print out the tip line and leave to you to decide if a tip is required. Especially the places where you are ordering your food to go that also have sit down service. Too expensive to have different software for the two different services.

When I was a grocery store bagger (I believe courtesy clerk is the PC name now) we were told by management to refuse tips. However I always did the "I can't accept that" and then take it when they offered again. When someone tips you $5 for bringing their groceries to their car that is ridiculous. That is almost an hours worth of pay for getting me out of doing work for the next 3-5 customers.

One of the reasons why, I'm sure alot of white wait staff dread when black people come in their section...
