I'm hoping to move to Atlanta in about 12-16 months

Here are my answers to the questions:

1. Budget
Would like to start off in a very cheap apartment. $600 or under.
2 bed, 1.5 bath would be ideal
also parking is needed

2. House/Condo/Townhome?
Eventually want a house but want to rent for a year or two to get to know the area

3. Employment Status(commute/work from home)
I am self employed and will work from home

4. Children(public school vs. private)
No children, don't care about schools

5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two
I am looking for an apartment within the Atlanta city limits so an urban lifestyle. I would like a *safe* neighborhood but it doesn't have to be exclusive or trendy. I mean, some cool restaurants and shops would be nice but it doesn't have to be the 'upper west side' of Atlanta or anything.

6. Easy access to public transit, important or not?
Would be nice to have easy access

7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood.
I am a 39 yr old white female but I am fine with a mixed neighborhood. In fact, I prefer some diversity, of race, of income, of age

If anyone knows of Jamaica Plain, just outside of Boston, MA, that's the kind of neighborhood I would love.

**I have pets. 2 dogs.

Any suggestions for me?

Based on this it sounds like you hope to find housing in an intown neighborhood
Jamaica Plain, Boston - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Perhaps areas adjacent to the City of Decatur would match your criteria--

Maybe Avondale. I couldn't find any previous threads with FYI on this area which might provide an overview.
From Google>>

The intown neighborhoods around Piedmont Park would be ideal but more 'upscale'--difficult to find housing in your price range.

ETA: I'm not certain what the Jamaica Plain neighborhood in Boston might be like--here are a few more alternatives>>>
