And where are the best driving destinations??? We have lived all over the country but being landlocked here in the Midwest (12 hour drive to the nearest beach) really sucks.....I wouldn't mind driving 5-6 hours but 12??? Thanks for any input...Soon to be relocating..

The very closest would likely be Tybee Island (4.5 hrs), followed by Hilton Head and St Simons Islands (5 hrs). The Gulf Coast beaches will take about 5.5 hrs.

More of a silver-grey, actually, due to the various estuaries carrying silt out into the sea. I think the GA beaches are perfectly nice, with much less of a 'honky-tonk' vibe than some of the Panhandle beaches.

It's OK IMO...nothing to write home about. Some of the neighborhoods have a nice 'shabby-chic' feel to them...the commercial areas, just shabby.
St Simons feels more like Hilton Head than Tybee, but more low key.

What is your idea of a 'nice' beach?

You should check out Cumberland Island. I have camped there several times with my family. It is a protected national seashore, so no stores or restaurants on the island, just campsites, a very expensive inn, and a few houses that belong to long time residents who were grandfathered in. No cars either, except for the park service and a few residents. It is truly spectacular, if you're into nature. It's chock full of wildlife including wild horses. JFK jr. and Carolyn Bessette were married there.

My idea of a nice beach is The Atlantic side of Florida. I enjoy the gulf but it is just to calm. I like Blue water and waves. Believe it or not, Myrtle Beach is pretty nice if you stay in the right place. Hilton is nice as well as The Outer Banks...I have been to Naples, Marco Island and many California Beaches and the Caribbean but I'm just looking for a drive to the ocean nice or not it's gotta be better than being landlocked in St. Louis. I grew up on Long Island being surrounded by the ocean in the Hamptons and Montauk and all over the island so this is just too far....Thanks for the repsonses
