I am looking for a good high school inside the perimeter- the smaller the better and safe for the students. Anyone have any ideas?

I have to honestly say.
Any school inside the parameter is fine as long as it is private.

Chamblee and LakeSide High are probably best school in Dekalb county (inside I-285). Both have average SAT close to 1100. Chamblee is Magnet school. When I was in my undergraduate school, I meet quite a few students from that school.

Both new SAT of chamblee and Lakeside beats all schools in Gwinnett and all schools in Cobbs (except Walton). Pretty impressive accomplishment.

Thanks so much for your insights. Good SAT scores are certainly wonderful and really speak to the academics of the schools- but as a parent, there are other things that make a school "good". Saftey, extra-curricular opportunities, and how much teachers like teaching there are also good indicators of a "good" school.

What do parents who send their children there think of the schools ?

I was told there are many Asian student population in Chamblee High who might boost SAT score quiet bit for the school. My guess is parents' support and involvement in kids' education is the key for them to be successful. Of course school is important, but is not the only factor for kids to be ready for a good college. A good headstart from early age is crucial in life time learning.

I would agree that Lakeside is probably the best inside the perimeter, if not one of the best period. I've known people who went there and loved it and still speak highly of the school years after the fact. It is in a nice quiet area and has fantastic scores in every facet. (did I spell that correctly?)

Default ITP Schools

I'm a teacher in Cobb County. Walton is a good school, but it is not inside the perimeter. Avoid all schools within APS (Atlanta Public Schools). These schools have some excellent teachers, but they are not places I would want to send my children, or places I would feel safe sending my children. I would actually agree with the person who said if you want inside the perimeter, use a private school. If you don't HAVE to be inside the perimeter, there are some nice schools in the Alpharetta area (Chattahoochee, Alpharetta, Milton, Northview). There are also some nice schools in Cobb County, but you have to be careful what side of the county you are on. I teach in West Cobb. Here, as in APS, we have some wonderful teachers, but our students are very economically disadvantaged. East Cobb has the best schools in the county. Hope this helped. Let me know if you have any questions. I have "teacher friends" all over Atlanta.
