Was All In The Family (1971-1979) and Archie Bunker's Place (80-83) a well known sit-com in the Atlanta area or the state of Ga?.

I ask because I'm a New Yorker but my brother and mom are in Roswell and Woodstock. Still we all have great memories of AITF and we associate it with NY so I wonder how well received it was in Atlanta. Were there any Archie Bunker lovers in Ga? or did that go too far?

I wasn't living here, but it was a national (possibly international) success and was viewed by millions of Americans every week on Sunday nights in the 1970s and early 1980s. Yes, people in Atlanta watched CBS too.

Why would you refer to Atlanta as if it is another world?

Of course it was popular here! I'd have to guess it was one of the top shows. Needless to say there are countless New Yorkers living here, but All in the Family went far beyond local humor.

You know, Carroll O'Connor later became a regular around Atlanta. His subsequent show, In The Heat of the Night, was shot in Covington, about 20 miles east of Atlanta. So he and other cast members were around here all the time for years.

I caught part of an AITF rerun just the other day. Gloria and Mike got in a big fight because Mike had gone to college and Gloria had put her education on hold to help him get through. Mike left the house in a huff in the middle of the night and went over to Edith and Archie's. Archie was all about telling Meathead to hit the bricks, of course, but Edith said he should stay and that he and Archie could share a bedroom.

You can imagine how that went over.

AitF was a groundbreaking show. It took me a while to warm up to it because it was so different from any sitcom before it. If I'm not mistaken, it was shot in front of a live audience so the reactions were authentic, i.e. no laugh track. It also took me a while to like Archie Bunker because I saw him as a hostile character. Some 1950's shows were not only shot in front of a live audience but shot live as well (even some commercials), however I don't know if they did that for a sitcom.

I wasn't living in Atlanta then but it was popular in the Pittsburgh area. I think it appealed more to a mature audience. In the 1970s, the "hip" show in Atlanta was "M*A*S*H" and we cared about the Doonesbury comic strip. I have no idea where to watch M*A*S*H now and does anyone care about Doonesbury?

Of course...it was popular everywhere, and groundbreaking at that! We watched as Archie stuck foot in mouth hundreds of times over the years and the great thing was, it always reminded us of SOMEONE WE KNEW WELL! For me it was my mother's brother...surely he was and still is the prototype for this show; and then there was my husband's uncle...OMG.

We ALL learned a lot.....well, maybe not the Archies we knew......they never really change!

I lived in Omaha at the time, and it was a hit there as well in Minneapolis where my grandparents lived. My grandfather loved Archie Bunker.

Is it me or is this question 30 years too late?

Default 40 years

if you go all the way back to when AITF started!!

thanks for the responses

I recently found AITF playing on one of my TV stations here in NY so I started getting nostalgic and since my mom and brother are in Roswell and Woodstock, i just happened to think about how well received the show was over there. I recently visited there 2 months ago

I think Archie seemed to soften up a little around 1977 or so compared to the way he was when the show first started when he was really rough and abrasive

after Mike & Gloria left in '78 I didn't particularly care for the show at the time, but watching some of those snippets on youtube they still seem good

How well received was Sanford & Son? How about Chico & the Man?
