I am hoping to relocate to atl in may. I am a single 26 year old female that is looking for a nice safe place to stay. Current issues: about 4 years ago I got an apartment with a family member and let's just say I am still paying for it today. SOoooo credit is not so good and I have an eviction. I am probably going to be working at perimeter and going to gpc for classes. I am not adverse to commuting although I know most people say that traffic is a monster. Don't worry though I have dealt with some pretty horriffic traffic here. Believe me Chicago traffic is no punk... Anyway I do not have a whole lot of money to spend on rent. $1000 is my maximum. I am hoping that I can get some help here. Any suggestions???

Ok, I've mentioned this place to folks before, and it's not exactly the best, but consider it:

710 Peachtree is an older highrise building on Peachtree Street in the Midtown area of Atlanta. It basically consists of studios, 1BR, and a few 2BR units. Rent usually includes some of the utilities, and I've heard they're somewhat easy on people with poor credit if you have a larger deposit you can maybe make upfront (plead your case to them).

It sits only 1.5 blocks from the North Avenue MARTA rail station (our subway system), and there are also stations in the Perimeter area North. Not sure if they're within walking distance of where you'll be working or not, but you can check out MARTA's interactive map HERE (broken link) to see a map and figure it out, maybe. Prices start around $700 a month and you can't beat the price for the location.

Here's the thing: 710 Peachtree is a love it or hate it place. There have been some really crappy reviews online at the apartment ratings sites about the place. Dicey people living there, bugs, etc. But then, if you read in some other places, you'll see the, "I have no idea what these people are talking about - I like it here" comments as well. So the best I can tell you is to check the place out yourself before signing a lease. Try to get down here for a few days to visit and check out some places including this one, and see how it goes.

Here is one link from a guy who posted some shots when he looked at a place in the 710 building: 710 peachtree pictures from home photos on webshots

I second the suggestion. I think it's an ideal for a really young person wanting to be independent in the city. No frills but it's all about location, really.

Does anyone have any other suggestions while I greatly appreciate 710 Peachtree it just isn't what I want, it's too small and outdated. You see I have been to Atl many times and I have seen a lot of apartments. I know beggers can't be choosers but I do spend enough time at home to know that I have to like my apartment. Are there any private renters out there with a nice condo that I can rent?? I understand a larger security deposit may be required.. Help...

If I were you I would get hooked up with a rental relocation realty group. We used one and she was great. There is no charge for their services because they are paid through referral fees from the communities.
Speaking as someone who has worked in property management, with an eviction on your record, that will be tough to be approved BUT not impossible. Private landlords would probably be an easier approval. Your best bet would be to look at the local newspapers online.
Again, you might want to try a relocation specialist. I just looked up her name and number, hopefully this is allowed - if not send me a private message and I will give it to you:
Caryn Lyng
Rental Relocation, Inc

She is very knowledgable and if she does not specialize in the area you are looking then she can refer you to someone else.

You might also want to consider looking outside of the perimeter. Prices tend to be much lower. I had a $100K house with a mort less than $600/month (fixed rate). I sold the house for something bigger a 2 years ago.

Look at Ashford Park and Gables, both on Ashford Dunwoody. If you're working and living around Perimeter Mall area, your life will be easy breezy by living over there too. Easy night out to Buckhead and Brookhaven but no sense doing the midtown commute to get to Perimeter if your life is going to be centered there. Also, a few complexes along Mt. Vernon (I forget the names) within walking distance to the MARTA train. When are you moving? If you're here on March 28th, you should come to the newcomer's conference at the Woodruff Arts Center. Feel free to PM me for more info.

You can probably find an apartment that's in a house on craigslist. Many of the older historic homes in Midtown and the surrounding area have been subdivided into apartments. They're definitely no frills (no concierge, pool, fitness room, etc) but usually cheaper and it's more residential.
