I am so glad that Coca Cola calls Atlanta home, and understand that they are investing millions in renovating the current headquarters building downtown. However Coca Cola maybe was our only chance of pulling off a new tower of at least 60 stories.

I remember when I first moved to Atlanta in 1996. I saw the Coke building.

My thought was, "that has to just be where they keep some of their people...where's the real headquarter building?"

The Coke building is really boring and quite frankly, embarassing for such a wealthy and established company.

Was Coca-Cola really considering Downtown or Midtown? Can't think of a good spot in Downtown and it's difficult to drive to. A place near the Midtown station would be good for them and a drive commute is easier.

I always thought it would be REALLY REALLY cool for Coke's HQ building to shaped like a giant Coke bottle plated in green .... With lights shining out the top like fizz!

I've also always thought it unfortunate that Home Depot didn't choose to build a signature tower downtown way back when, but instead put its HQ in that rather unimpressive big boxy thing in Vinings (that doesn't even have the HD name or logo anywhere on it ... why is that?!)

That might be better for Atlanta's version of the Eiffel Tower.

And Home Depot is known for its ostentatious flashiness.

At least Home Depot has made indelible marks on the city with the donation of the aquarium and Blank owns the Falcons.

Coke sponsors a lot of cultural events and that is cool, but I really think that they should do much more for the city and really leave a major mark. What has Coke done, aside from build World of Coke, which is really just a commercial for itself?

Whoa! That's Bernie Marcus. The Aquarium wasn't a corporate gift.

Coke is beholden to its stockholders first and foremost. What Coke sponsors is for its image. You want Coke philanthropy? Look to Woodruff and other Coke shareholders.

Home Depot wants the focus to be on the stores and not the "headquarters". If you notice the sign out front says "Home Depot Store Support Center"

My understanding is that Coca Cola owns all the land from their current headquarters back to the World of Coke - there was discussion at one point that they would build out the area as a "campus" environment similar to many tech companies.

That's true. I think Home Depot actually made cuts in staff at its HQ so as to put more people at its stores. Even the corporate staff are required to spend time working in a store to understand what is happening at the "front lines". Unless there is a change in its management style, don't expect an architecturally significant Home Depot Tower in Downtown/Midtown. And if they do, look for a decline in Home Depot and Charlotte-based Lowe's to pass them by.
