I am thinking of renting an 1 bedroom, 850sq foot apartment in this building for a year. The price is $1400/m including utilities. This seems high-ish for Atlanta but I'm coming from NYC where I was paying more for less space in a dumpy building.

Just curious if there is anything bad I should know about this building or the management?

Can't really beat that location if you are looking for an area like Decatur (are you?). Building is fairly new, and I think it's primarily owners living there (not renters), so I'd assume it's well kept. Rent is definitely on the high side, but you are paying for the location, and the fact there are not many other residential buildings in downtown Decatur. Candler Court is a smaller, older building that is a little farther down Ponce where you may be able to find something cheaper, but still plenty convenient to all the cool stuff in Decatur.

I wasn't looking for an area like Decatur. However, aside from Midtown I have not found another area in Atlanta that works without a car. My job is only about a 12 minute bike ride from downtown Decatur, whereas it's about a 45 minute ride from Midtown. That's the main consideration. I tried Inman Park for a month. It has more character but there's nothing to do besides walk around and look at all the nice big houses I don't live in. The sidewalks are in such rugged shape I blew out a pair of sneakers. Not sure I'm going to be here longer than a year so I thought I'd just make it easy on myself.

I lived a block from the Artisan for many years, and I think red92s has given a pretty fair assessment of it.

Yeah, that's high. I think you can find something that size under $1000.

I suppose Ice House Lofts might get you into a lower price range by moving a couple blocks outside of downtown.

I agree that you could likely get that square footage in downtown Decatur (condo) for less $$. I heard the artisan is in high demand so that might explain the price.

We started out in Inman park and moved to Decatur. Upgrade IMO!

I'm over in the Oakhurst section of Decatur and I pay less than $900 for a 900 square foot 2 bedroom. Now, utilities (other than water) are not included. I also don't have w/d connections, the only thing I really wish I had in this apartment.

As others have said, unless you're really set on the Artisan, you can be in the same area for less $$.
