Nice to see those pics of a gas-fired station replacing the coal down at Plant McDonough. Hell, as much coal as we use for power, I almost wish they'd just spam natural gas plants everywhere though. They're not without faults of their own, though...

Good, I say! And I am perfectly fine with paying a bit more in energy costs to generate cleaner air. I don't think folks realize how much of an impact this has on health. There are numerous studies that say polluted air raises the risks of heart and lung diseases for EVERYONE--not just kids with asthma.

A full confession: air quality is one of the things that gave me a really bad impression of Atlanta before I moved here a few years ago. I had friends who had lived here in the 80s and 90s who said that there were times of day where you couldn't jog because the air quality was so bad.

Having moved here, it's not as bad as I feared. But man do we have some hazy, smoggy days sometimes.

Amen to that my friend...I have definitely experienced some pretty smoggy and hazy days since my move to Atlanta.

Considering this is my fifth day on a sinus headache I must say this can't happen too soon. My ENT asked me what I was allergic to and I replied "Atlanta." Interestingly enough, pollen doesn't bother me all that much, but the smog is absolutely horrific here. I must say it's almost as bad as Birmingham and that's really saying something.

Unhappy I am the canary in the mine.

I have lived here for 23 years. I am looking to move no matter what the cost. I have been sick with chronic upper respiratory problems since January of this year. At least four rounds of anti biotics, many rounds of steriods. I am done with Georgia period.

So long as Atlanta refuses to address the real polluters: power plants, airplanes, and tractor trailer trucks, it really doesn't matter what kind of emissions standards are set for cars. It won't help much.

Car emissions create nearly 50% of air pollution.

Exactly.

Only 50%.

So even if you make cars 25% cleaner, it's only going to make the air 12.5% cleaner.

Cars are already about as clean as they are going to get. But trucks can get MUCH cleaner, and our power plants can also get much cleaner.
