Final APS Redistricting Plan - Goes to APS April 10 (Atlanta: neighborhoods, middle schools)

Below is the final recommendation to be submitted to the Atlanta Board of Education on April 10th.

A few changes to the preliminary plan,

Largest is Coan Middle School to stay open, 10 others to close

This proposal (for the time being) is a decent one.


The only closing school that I think should stay open is Capitol View Elementary.

Agreed, this is a good proposal and if accepted in its entirety will help soothe the concerns of parents and students around the city.

Not everyone will be happy with a major redistricting like this but it's a start. If the goal is to give everyone a quality education that starts with giving everyone the same staff and resources. This can't be done if schools are 30% utilized.

We'll know soon enough what the board decides.

Glad to see APS' full commitment to Coan Middle School. If one good thing came from this redistricting, it is that it brought the Coan community together. The neighborhoods of Edgewood, Kirkwood, and East Lake are very diverse and Coan will benefit from people of different races and social-economic classes.

I am glad the parents fro Summerhill and Cabbagetown are happy with being redistricted into Grant Park.

The Jackson cluster is full of some exciting neighborhoods that are currently having a baby boom. It will be interesting to see where these schools are in 10 years.

I apologize, but may have spoken too soon about the final plan.

Once again there were surprises for some of Atlanta's neighborhoods in this final proposal. D.H. Stanton and Towns Elementary were not nominated in the preliminary redistricting plan for closure but have shown up in this final redistricting plan as schools scheduled to be closed if it passes. Parents in the Peoplestown neighborhood (Stanton) as well as those zoned for Towns Elementary turned out at their respective schools last night to challenge the closings.

This seems to be a very messy affair, I can't understand how there continues to be surprises at this stage of the process. The pattern is that one school is nominated, parents rally, APS caves and closes a different school in a neighborhood that hasn't had the chance to express their concerns. This might work early in the planning process but it is not effective this late.

This final plan is an up or down vote so it will either be accepted or rejected in its entirety. Just doesn't seem to be a fair fight.

For those following the redistricting process, a second final plan was released this morning at around 8 AM.

This one will be voted on today at the APS Board Meeting.

Just glad to see APS commitment to the "New Coan". I believe Davis is wanting to make the Jackson Cluster school great and compete with Grady for the best in the city. With the neighborhoods included in the Jackson Cluster it is possible. APS has to commit the resources to King and Coan. The elementary schools in this cluster are good, its the middle schools that are lagging and bring down Jackson H.S.
