My husband and I currently rent a home in Alpharetta, but we found a home we are thinking about buying in the Sugar Mill subdivision in Johns Creek (located off Abbott's Bridge between 141 and PIB) and we are wondering about the commute. My husband works at Scottish Rite and gets to work around 8:00/8:30 am. He leaves work around 5:00 pm.

Such nice houses..... jealous.

The commute is probably bad, but anything in metro ATL is going to have awful traffic. It's sort of a daily ordeal for Atlanta. Rush hour starts at 4. A lot of families who live near 141 workout before going home to beat the traffic...so you can get creative like that.

He should try it out 10 days in a row in the evening, and compare with what he normally currently has. Someone can say bad/good, but we dont know how to compare with what he currently has.

If doing the trial, Sugarmill to back home to Alpharetta in the evening will not be too bad as the traffic pattern is away from GA 400 in the evening.

Is Sugarmill nicer than Windward? There are homes in Windward in Sugarmill price range?

Currently, he drives down 400 - getting on at the Haynes Bridge exit - and it takes him 55 minutes to arrive at Scottish Rite. If we live in Sugar Mill, he will either come down 141 or P'tree Industrial. We really planned to just look in our current area, but my realtor sent us this house and it is perfect. The neighborhood is great and we got a really great vibe. The house has everything on my list. He is doing a trial run in the morning. If it is less than an hour, we will put an offer on the house.

Would like to hear his feedback, and what time he managed. I used to travel down 141, but that was a few years back.

Sugarmill is a nice subdivision. Nice common area, with sports options. You will also be in the top school district of Georgia (Northview).

Well, it took him 1 hr 10 min on this rainy monday morning. He went 141 to peachtree corners/spalding. He said the problem was the 40 min it took him on 141 to get to p'tree corners. Hmmm - We are going to give it another run on P'tree Industrial in the morning and try the commute home. He assures me he is okay with it - but he is a hard worker and I have a hard time justifying his long drive. Keep your fingers crossed! I work at Egleston and my current commute is about an hour at rush hour but I can usually flex my hours.

This morning everyone's commute was longer than usual with the rain. That happens. Usually I get to the office in half hour tops and it took me 50 minutes.

Can he adjust his work schedule? Like go to work at 7:30 instead of 8:00/8:30? My co-workers come in anytime between 7:00 and 9:00.

On the days he is in the hospital, he could flex his hours a bit - but that is one week every 6 weeks. He is a physician and sees patients starting at 8:00 am, last patient is at 4:30 pm. We are going to try the drive again in the morning. We are trying to figure the kids out too. My husband usually drops them off in the morning because my commute to Egleston is fine if I leave before 7:00 - and the daycare we are currently using doesn't open until 7:00. We should try to find one around Sugar Mill that starts at 6:30 and provides vans to school. My son will start kindergarten in the fall and I think the earliest he can get to school is 7:10 am.

Looks like both of you have to travel south for work.

Intersection of 141 and State Bridge is a most time-wasteful intersection to have to deal with on a daily basis, especially if you have to travel much further south. It may be better on Peachtree Industrial, but if you add in the extra time you have to spend on Abbotts Bridge Rd (120) to get to Sugarmill, it may not be much of a better choice.

Just wondering if you are new to metro Atlanta? Or trying out the suburbs for sake of kids school? As much as I like Sugarmill, I think since both of you have long commutes, it is better to fix location first. If you want Johns Creek rather than Alpharetta, you could try living on Old Alabama Rd close to 141, or in one of the subdivisions on 141 south of Old Alabama.

141 and top 285 are roughs commute during rush hour either way. If you know your jobs are that far away long term (hard to know that though) and you know are limited to working during rush hour times, I would look somewhere else closer.
