Ga. State study: Welfare programs discourage work, marriage - Atlanta Business Chronicle

Very interesting article. Definitely applies to Atlanta.

people abuse the welfare system...they want a check and food stamps but don't want to work. You supposed to use these programs to improve yourself. Not depend upon them.

When I was 18 I applied for assistance and was gladly given it. But I was looking for a job everyday and when I found one, I was so happy to call the welfare department and tell them that I don't need them anymore. They actually sent me a letter congratulating me on being independent.

Too many people are trying to get assistance when this country is already broke.

But it is an interesting article.

On one of the other boards, there was someone on "disablility" that was looking to make money. But, he rejected the thought of a minimum wage job, because it would only be an increase of $3/hr over what just getting a disability check would get him. Of course, in addition to not getting the money, he was not getting the job skills that would get him a better paying job.

If you give people free money, they won't want to work for it later?

Wow. Breakthrough. Wonder how much money they spent 'figuring that out.'

I don't think it is racist to say that the system is broke to the point that it hurts the people that it is supposed to help.

But there will be people who make comments with that point.

Yeah, but if you are constantly worrying about them (or worrying that people may think that you are one of them), then you can't have a discussion about anything in Atlanta.
