Several TV pilots were filmed in the metro area this spring, at the expense of LA which had its slowest pilot season in years. They even shot one at the site of the new Pinewood Studios in Fayette County that I've heard nothing more about. That's not unusual; until and unless a pilot gets picked up by a network, nobody ever hears about them.

It's also worth noting that the pilot for "Devious Maids" (starring Susan Lucci) was shot in LA, but production of the show was moved to Atlanta after Lifetime bought the series. I think we'll start seeing more of that.

How about Teen Wolf was shot here in Atlanta for two seasons and then moved to LA for season 3 and will be moving back to Atlanta for season 4. The studio lot look was not good enough.

Wow. Really? Do you have a source on this? That's especially significant since the show is SET IN CALIFORNIA! (like Drop Dead Diva, Devious Maids, and several other Atlanta-based shows)

North Carolina close to axing tax break for movie companies

North Carolina is close to dropping one of the most extensive programs for awarding tax breaks to film companies, reports The Wall Street Journal. The move would be a high-profile retreat from an arms race among states, including Georgia, to lure Hollywood productions, the paper says. The WSJ adds that more than 800 movies and television shows have been filmed in North Carolina since the 1980s, when "Dirty Dancing" was shot along the banks of this mountain-ringed lake. The state began providing incentives in the early 2000s.
According to the WSJ, “In, 2012, it [N.C.] paid $69 million in incentives to draw such productions as "The Hunger Games," and it has netted an average of $168 million in direct production spending a year over the past six years, according to the.”North Carolina trails only California, New York, Georgia and Louisiana in production revenue, the film office said. But the budget for the next two fiscal years approved in July by the state legislature lets the incentive program sunset on Jan. 1, 2015. Both Republicans and Democrats say North Carolina would be better off cutting taxes across the board or giving incentives to manufacturers offering long-term jobs. The state’s program consists of a 25 percent refundable tax credit, the WSJ adds. Dama Claire, a tax expert who advises producers on where to film, told the WSJ that the number of states offering incentives has declined as they cite shifting priorities or problems with individual programs or productions.

I think that had to do with the fact that the production won some tax breaks in CA, which is why they went back. CA has some sort of lottery system for handing out tax breaks to productions.

Yes, I know. And from what I've read, they were approved again to receive the California tax credits for season 4. So what's your source?

Yes, and it will. I wouldn't expect it to happen for probably another 5-10 years though.

This is a cyclical process that has happened in various states/countries since the 70s. Tax incentives dropped, studios abandoned/sold, jobs lost. The work follows the dollar.

Btw Gerry, don't know if you remember me but I was in the other atl film thread. I now live and work in the film industry in Los Angeles. People are very mislead if they think Atlanta is the next Hollywood.

They aren't mislead, they are stupid.

If you are right why is Pinewood spending millions of dollars to come here then?
