Hampton is most known for being the site of the Atlanta Motor Speedway where several auto-racing events take place (including NASCAR and Indy Car).

Otherwise, outside of the events at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Hampton is basically just a small residential town that is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) outside of Atlanta in Atlanta's far-southern suburbs.

There is not much to do in Hampton itself as the city and surrounding area are basically just made up of single-family residential housing, housing which is indeed very-cheap by European standards (...which is why homes in many interior American cities like Atlanta, Phoenix, etc are very-popular with real estate investors from Europe, Canada and even Asia).

Being that Hampton is basically just a small outlying bedroom community that is virtually completely residential in nature (only a few small neighborhood commercial businesses and nothing more) it is not a job center.

Almost all of the people who live in Hampton commute to jobs in Atlanta, which is where you would have to look for work if you wanted to live in Hampton or any of Atlanta's tens-of-dozens (if not hundreds) of neighborhoods, suburbs and exurbs.

There is some modest outer-suburban retail and shopping about 15 kilometers away in nearby McDonough that cater to area residents as well as motorists traveling through the area on Interstate 75 between the Great Lakes and the resort areas of Florida.

But most of the major shopping, restaurants, nightclubs, bars, entertainment and festivals are about 45 kilometers away in the budding international city that is Atlanta.

how long does it take to get to atlanta?

do you think it will be hard to get a job as a financial analyst, events planner, human resources or retail manager in Atlanta or McDonough? and how much can i expect to earn?

Does Hampton have a nice small town community feel? are people the people there friendly in general? how do u think they will reacts to a British person? and how would they react to an interracial relationship?

what stores do they have?

what are the pros and cos of living there?

thanks for your time, sorry about all these questions

...It is about a 40-45 minute drive to Atlanta from Hampton when traffic conditions are good, about an hour or more when traffic conditions are not so good.

...You would have to inquire with the companies which you would might be interested in working for to get answers to those questions.

Though with the job market still being very-challenging in the Atlanta area coming out of one of the worst economic downturns that the area has experienced in the post-World War II era, you should absolutely have a job lined up first before moving to the slowly economically-recovering Atlanta area.

...Hampton is okay with friendly people and is not a bad area.

Since most people who live in the Atlanta area were born outside of the state of Georgia (or even outside of the U.S. in many cases), there should be no ill-reactions to you being British anywhere in the Atlanta metro area as Atlanta is pretty much a town of people who were born and grew up somewhere else.

There also should not be much of an ill-reaction to an interracial relationship as Atlanta has grown into one of the most diverse metro regions in the U.S. in recent years, particularly on the Northside in ultra-diverse Gwinnett County and North Fulton County where there are very-large and fast-growing populations of Hispanics and Asians.

...Except for a handful of small shops in Hampton's very-small historic downtown, Hampton has no shopping in the immediate area.

The shopping is in nearby McDonough and the stores are pretty typical suburban American big-box stores that in the suburbs of every major American city (Wal-Mart, Kohl's, JcPenney, TJ Maxx, Lowe's, SuperTarget, Home Depot, etc)...nothing really all that remarkable.

The best shopping (or at least the much-better shopping) is found about at least 45 minutes to an hour away on the Northside of Atlanta where there is a much-larger variety of stores that range from upscale to quirky to vintage.

The pros are that it is cheaper to live in a town/area like Hampton than it would be to live in many of Atlanta's other suburbs.

It is cheaper to live in a South Metro suburb like Hampton in Henry County than it would be to particularly live in Atlanta's Northern suburbs of Cobb, Cherokee, North Fulton, Forsyth and Gwinnett counties which are much more in-demand because of their relatively much-closer location to amenities like much-better schools, better shopping, grocery stores, parks and scenic recreational areas.

The cons of living in a town/area like Hampton is that unless you are an avid auto-racing fan, there is nothing much to do, see or experience in the immediate area.

Commutes between Hampton and the jobs centers in Atlanta can also be very-challenging with rush hour commutes to and from Atlanta often taking up to an hour or even more on many days, particularly when driving conditions are challenging (traffic accidents, wet weather, etc).

Traffic can also be very-challenging on evenings and weekends when special events are going on at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

...That's okay.

Instead of getting all of your information online about places that you might be interested in relocating to, what might be best is for you to visit the Atlanta area for an extended period and fully consider all of your options.

That's because there are much-better relocation options in the Atlanta region than a small sleepy town like Hampton which is only basically a good suburb to live in if you work on the southside of town (particularly if one works at or in the area of the Atlanta Airport) and only want relatively dirt-cheap newer housing in an area of halfway-decent schools and nothing else (no nearby jobs, shopping, entertainment or anything).

Also, virtually all of the types of jobs you are looking for (in Finance as an analyst, planner, manager, etc) would likely be found much farther to the north on the Northside of Atlanta in the Downtown, Midtown, Cumberland/Galleria, Perimeter/Dunwoody, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Norcross areas, etc.

With the job market still being so soft in the Atlanta area in the wake of one of the worst economic downturns since the Great Depression, you would be best advised to have a job lined up first before moving to the still economically-struggling Atlanta region.

ONLY after you have a job lined up and you know where you will be working in the Atlanta region, should you then consider where you want to live so that you can live relatively close to your job so as to minimize the effects of your rush hour/peak hour commute in a metro area where the road network has reached and exceeded its capacity to handle vehicles and where public transportation is still completely non-existent in many areas, despite the extreme limitations of the road network.
