I do think Stone Mountain is our icon, along with MLK, Margaret Mitchell, and the Coca Cola sign among others...but it would be nice to have something huge and concrete somewhere in the center of the city. But keep in mind that most of the world's iconic structures didn't start out that way, and many (like the Eifel Tower) were despised in the beginning. It may take decades for something built now to become an icon.

There are a few cities that have an iconic landmark, but most cities actually don't have one that is recognized around the world. A city like Madrid is known for its architecture and history and maybe the Prado, but I can't name an iconic landmark there that is known throughout the world like the in Paris, Rome, NYC, or London. There are many great world cities that don't have instantly recognized landmarks but are still great cities with a lot to offer.

Maybe Atlanta could build a signature communications tower? They seem to be all the rage in Asia. The one below is in the Chinese city of Guangzhou. It includes an observation deck, outdoor gardens and a restaurant, among other things (communications equipment).

And here's one in Tokyo

What about a dancing hologram near technology square it would be cool and it could be known as the largest hologram in the world rising 1,000ft

I like what another poster suggested: our trees. I would certainly add Piedmont Park into that, too!

Yes, we totally do! Me and a friend were just talking about this the other day. We should have something to signify New south and Rebirth. The once Railroad capital, and city that Sherman burned down, only to grow back larger. That would be Amazing if they do. Atlanta has always been known as being Progressive and the city, "Too busy to hate". It's time to brand and start building and themeing things only iconic to our city. Unlike that phony Millenium Gate that looks like the Arc Triomphe. LOL

Does a landmark have to be a building or physical object? Having the most recognized brand in the world is a landmark achievement. Plus CNN and the Centennial Olympics. Those three things put Atlanta on the map in a pretty big way.
