What do you guys think? Personally I think its something we definitely shouldn't be proud of. I am not too sure about the source as they only state its an "anti-sprawl" organization named Smarth Growth America. How did they come to the conclustion Altanta is no 1-----I cant say. All the same, no one can deny we have a sprawl problem and have had so for a very long time. I think the City of Atlanta is begining to get its act together, but a lot of the suburbs see themselves in direct competition with the city; which has lead to a noncohesive metro area. We can't keep doing this!

Here is a comment from someone on the AJC site. Kind of the same point I was making

"Having lived in several large metros, I've observed that the sprawl in Atlanta isn't limited to just far flung neighborhoods. It's how you all think. You have no sense of community or neighborly concern. You only really care about yourselves and your little chunk of the forest. It's evident in your attitudes, conversations, travel patterns, and politics. The developers only build what you all buy."

Sprawl as the article pointed out is more than density, it's development and travel patterns. Houston for instance, have horrible zoning laws, but they have an excellent grid, so some of their troubles are fixable. We have a long fight ahead of us, but we do have some advantages. (Heavy Rail)

No, of course the devil is always in the details. What brings down our score in the way they measured it is the large amount of counties that make up Metro Atlanta due to proximity. If we were to narrow it down to the core five counties of Metro Atlanta, it is no different than Dallas or Houston. Good luck trying to convince people of that though:

The report looked at following items, the numbers below are in order left to right: County State Density score, Land use mix score, Activity centering score, Street connectivity score, Composite (total) score

Atlanta:
Fulton County GA 107.63 122.60 146.48 108.57 126.94
DeKalb County GA 111.99 120.73 96.18 100.65 109.34
Cobb County GA 106.99 116.91 91.39 107.76 107.28
Gwinnett County GA 106.36 111.94 88.70 89.68 98.95
Clayton County GA 106.35 106.15 84.62 98.10 98.49

Houston:
Harris County TX 112.9 122.96 115.12 138.63 128.31

Dallas-Ft. Worth:
Dallas County TX 116.03 123.21 125.52 139.21 132.85
Tarrant County TX 108.94 119.35 100.17 128.90 118.12

The only item where we have a serious challenge is in "Street connectivity score". I don't think anyone should be surprised by that.

Well if you look at the full report, Houston and Dallas are better, but still suck. Also, I noticed Savannah has an excellent score.

Let's face it, outside of Manhattan (and even that is a shell of it's former self), density in this country is a joke. Most of these analysis show only a few hundred people per square mile difference. That's nothing.

Atlanta is pretty tribal. There's the Dunwoody tribe, the East Atlanta tribe, the Canton tribe. DFW has a lot of city vs. city stuff, but nothing like Atlanta which gets down to the neighborhood level.
