Hello, I am new to the forum and currently looking for a place to live in Atlanta. I am moving there in late May or early June.

I have a third grader son currently enrolled in gifted and talented program. I would appreciate suggestion from anyone for a best place to live. My major concerns are:

1. Good school
2. Safety
3. No more than 25 minutes drives to Morehouse School of Medicine

The property specialist from ProMove recommends Buckhead and Midtown areas. But she did not seem to know much about schools, so I am counting on you guys to help me out.

Thanks in advance!

I'd suggest looking at places that feed Morris Brandon Elementary (South Buckhead) or Morningside Elementary (midtown-Virginia Highlands).

Sarah Smith Elementary, Fernbank Elementary and Springdale Park Elementary are within 25 minutes on good days.

People seem to like Sutton (Sarah Smith) and Inman (Morningside) for the middle schools, although I'm kind of leery of all the MS close in. They are building a new North Atlanta HS (Smith/Brandon) and spending a bunch of money while converting the HS to a MS. Grady HS is fed by Inman/Morningside and is probably the best of the Atlanta city schools (not that is saying much) and some seem to like it. There are some very good public elementary schools close in, but the MS and HSs aren't as strong.

Not sure how long it takes to get to Morehouse from Vinings in Cobb County, but they have some very good schools there. That also may be someplace you want to check.

We had an educational consultant when we moved 5 years ago and she gave us the elementary schools I mentioned to you (except for Springdale Park which is new and took a number of kids from overcrowded Morningside). We wanted to be close to downtown and midtown. She also mentioned Jackson Elementary in NW Atlanta, but that is likely more than 25 minutes for you.

Our realtor also said people were fond of E. Rivers (between Morris Brandon and Sarah Smith) and Mary Lin (east of Morningside and Springdale Park), but we chose not to look in those zones. The housing costs will be a little less in those two areas. Both of those schools seem to be benefitting from the popularity of the surrounding schools.
