Good job, private sector -- you're finally back to where you were more than six years ago.
Businesses employed 116 million people in March, the highest number for private-sector payrolls since January 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The economy added 192,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate remained at 6.7 percent, BLS reported. All of the net gains in March came from the private sector.
We've finally made up all of the 8.8 million jobs lost by the private sector during the economic downturn that began in December 2007, according to BLS. But government employment is down by 535,000 since the recession began, so overall employment remains below where it was in December 2007.
March's employment gains were slightly below economists' expectations, but they do suggest that the winter jobs slump is behind us. The numbers were probably good enough to keep the Federal Reserve on track for more tapering of its bond purchases, while keeping its interest rates near zero.
But is getting back to where we started before the Great Recession a good return on investment from the unprecedented amount of money the Fed has poured into the economy, not to mention the federal government's $831 billion economic stimulus package?
Some Washington insiders contend the government needs to spend more money to pump up the economy, given that 3.7 million Americans remain unemployed for six months or more, and most of the jobs that are being created are in lower-wage occupations.
"The Congress should turn from austerity to bold steps to put people to work on work that needs to be done: service corps for the young, a big infrastructure program to rebuild and modernize the country, aid to states to rehire teachers, steps to make child care affordable and extend preschool to all," said Robert Borosage, co-director of Campaign for America's Future.

Thats great!!!!
