Hello,
My husband and I are relocating to Atlanta from Connecticut. We have a few months living expenses saved as if we were still living in CT. I am interested in Administrative Assistant work temporarily. How hard will it be to find work? I've started looking already, but after reading threads here about employment I'm getting nervous. We have been blessed to have quite a few friends that are down there already. The only thing is that most of them are teachers, and while I am trying to get into that field I have to go to school for two years before I can even be considered for the position I want (Media Specialist). I am waiting a year before I start school, so I need some kind of work to pay bills. We are staying with friends until we get on our feet (they have a big home, and have said we can stay on their second floor). I'm just scared now that I won't be able to find any kind of work. My husband's job is supposed to relocate him, but now he's telling me he doesn't want to be at this job anymore, and he wants to quit and start looking when we move down there. I work currently at a Credit Union and I'm looking for a salary of 30-35K, I have administrative experience. I am training my replacement as I type. I'm really scared now. Are we doomed? I don't want to stay with our friends forever, but I certainly don't want to look for an apartment thinking we'll both have jobs and be screwed. |

You may find work as an admin fairly easily, but I wouldn't count on making $30-35k doing it- more like $10-12/hour. You can also look into some of the temp agencies, but again, it's not going to be easy to walk into $30k/year without establishing yourself for a bit.

Thank you for the response!
I can take 12 dollars an hour for now, heck even 10. That pays more than what the Para's are offered. I was thinking about being a Para to be in the school system so that when I finished my MLS I could network, but one school offered me 1000 a month, not so much money. That gives me some hope. We have money saved up so we wouldn't be coming down dead broke. And we do know people in the area. |

Now don't get too excited- you're still going to have to work hard to find that job- they're out there, but there's plenty of competition for them. Good luck!

No I'm not getting too excited, but I have worked in a few fields so if Admin isn't looking my way I could hopefully look at banking to get my foot in the door. This is where I'm hoping that knowing someone could be an advantage.

You didn't say what type of work your husband is in. Why doesn't he take a transfer and allow his company to pay to relocate you all down here, then grin a bear it for a year and THEN look for something else? At least that way you'd be assured that one of you would be working right off the bat and you'd be settled before he hits the job market. |

Brightstar78, do NOT let your husband quit his job before he gets down here. the job market is kinda rough especially with the economy the way it is. Listen, i moved to Atlanta with a job transfer too but I already knew I was going to quit. I had made the mistake of relocating before without a job and it took me alot longer to find work than i had anticipated. So the second time around, i came with a job to get myself acclimated to a new city without the stress of having to find a job, and then i quit. I'm assuming your cost of living will be cheaper in ATL so if you have a few months worth of savings based on CT expenses, you might be able to live here a little bit longer with that money. But make sure at least one of you has a job.
