Sandy Springs deserves credit for trying to design their city right.

Sandy Springs Exploring Complete Street Design - Curbed Atlanta

Quote:
Now, the city is doing something that even Buckhead, which outpaces Sandy Springs in density, couldn't muster just months ago. According to Reporter Newspapers, the city is forging ahead with plans to add bike lanes and more pedestrian-friendly amenities to Hammond Drive. What's more, civic leaders are concerned with future-proofing the road to accommodate mass transit. One of the few major east-west connectors in the city, Hammond Drive serves as an arterial road stretching from the heart of Perimeter Center and Dunwoody MARTA station to the new City Springs development in "downtown" Sandy Springs, linking the areas to Ga. Highway 400.

A quick glance of Google maps shows that they have a huge sidewalk construction project going on all over town. With the new downtown district under construction, the other urban-oriented developments in the vicinity, and the tearing down of old-style apartment complexes and drive-to businesses going on around Roswell Rd., it could create the beginnings of a nice walkable area.

Good for them! It's nice to see not just buffered bike lanes but a real raised cycle track that has a physical barrier between cars and bikes. That's exactly what people who hate bicyclists should be asking for, too.

I can see it working well on Hammond from the Dunwoody portion starting at Ashford-Dunwoody up to the Glenridge portion which I suppose is Sandy Springs. There's plenty enough space. From there through Mt. Vernon, it looks kind of tight.

Nope, they are still allowing space for transit:

Sandy Springs officials also tipped their hand to a renewed push for some kind of mass transit running along Hammond, saying they don’t want the bike and pedestrian plan to preclude it.
