Nothing that happens in this county surprises me anymore. I thought that the corruption only plagued the school district and the county government, but the police department? What's next, the DeKalb County Public Library?

"in 2008, the county had more than 11,000 aggravated assaults. Investigators with the federal audit team found that the real number was closer to 1,000."

You would think this would be a dead give away. There is no way you have 30 instances of aggregated assault every single day in DeKalb.

It is true that specific governing bodies (DeKalb and APS especially) have been havens for corruption.

However, I don't think that your assertion that the Atlanta area "can't do anything right" is correct.

- Most suburban school districts (DeKalb is an exception, of course) are doing fine. Gwinnett just won an award. I don't think these school districts are engaging in "corruption".

- MARTA: In 2010, MARTA was dozens of millions of dollars in the hole, cut numerous bus routes, closed bathrooms, and generally cut the quality of their service. Now, MARTA is doing so well under Keith Parker - including the first budget surplus in a long time - that even MARTOC (The Republican-dominated MARTA oversight committee) has warmed to the agency. In fact, MARTA is now back in the financial position to be able to talk about expansion. I don't think that's "corruption".

- City of Atlanta: Finance wise, the city has also cut huge chunks of waste out of the budget over the last couple of years. The city's finances haven't been this good in decades. I don't think balancing a budget/establishing a small operating surplus is "corruption".

Just as it's naive to think that Atlanta is doing everything right (it's not,) it's also naive to think that the region is hopelessly corrupt (it's not).

that is strange. here only 1/3 of crimes are reported by police as such. it makes the city look good. we dont want to put our city in "a negative light" sound familiar???
impression management by stat manipulation.

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." - Mark Twain

With the proper manipulation of numbers, you can make a city look like anything you want it to be: a wretched hive of crime and corruption, a near-utopia, or something perfectly average.

Why do people take crime statistics seriously anyway?

A county that wants to look bad. Haha.

Well, if the state would actually supplement wages for police officers, the county would not have to fake it to make it.
