The Marietta Daily Journal - Lawmaker files bill to annex Braves back into Atlanta
I'll just leave this here without comment for now and go start the popcorn. Who wants extra butter?

I'll take the extra butter. Let's see how far we can get before we start arguing over streetcars.

Besides, why stop with just I-75 and SunTrust Park? Throw all of Cumberland CID in there, and if this ridiculous proposal somehow gets passed by legislators and voters (hint: it won't,) at least we can finally start seriously discussing MARTA expansion to the Cumberland area and getting rail to SunTrust.

Why can't people just let Cobb be Cobb?

Well that is the long narrow connecting line. It is the street car. They didn't annex enough room for stops though.

Quick legal analysis. Unless they have added something to the legislation beyond a simple annexation this is very much legal and a real Georgia lawmaker should be aware of this (or not voted into office). That is just Southern politic'n saying it might be illegal.

This is one of the main avenues for annexation in Georgia law.

Now realistically it isn't going to happen and I see this as an unnecessary political message that will distract the region from real issues. The majority of the representatives of the area being annexed would have to vote for it and the chances of that are slim to none. It isn't worth arguing over.

Now personal opinion:

This should not happen. Cities must negotiate with counties and often provide services differently depending on short-comings of various counties. This is why most new cities frequently do not cross county lines. The situation of Cobb vs Fulton is different, therefore cities might choose to act differently on different sides of the border. So rather than having a city negotiating services with 2 counties, it is easier for there to be two different cities. The state legislature has typically frowned on this too.

Atlanta in Dekalb was established a long time ago.

The other issue is once a city is in another county, this will open up other types of future annexation options to them in the new county. When they are not already in the county there is a special process they must go through where the county has partial say. This would potentially open up future, easier annexations in the Cumberland area, because future annexations in Cobb would not have that special process with the county.

I also do not like the narrow 'lot' following I-75 for the annexation. This could potentially block a city, notably Smyrna, from wanting to serve the entire area on both sides of I-75. There could be a city of Cumberland or a large annexation by Smyrna that would seek to straddle I-75. It seems superficial to block that by creating such a narrow linear strip for a superficial annexation deeper inside the county. It shouldn't be allowed for a city to go after that one development once the money has been put into place and construction starts.

They need to a least take a sizable area like they care about it if they are going to go down that road.

In the mean time... it is a good time to be a newsman in Atlanta. This makes for a great attention grabbing headline.

Hilarious. As a City of Atlanta resident I obviously don't want my tax money going to fund the necessary infrastructure improvements around the Braves stadium. But watching the reaction of angry conservative Cobb legislators to this non-story is going to be delicious schadenfreude.
