Or is it truly drugs all over BEYOND POT and crime ridden>?
Also is it Mexicans and blacks living in them?Im surprised of the Mexicans Where are the Mexicans?
Im not from ATL,Atough Ive been in Atlanta dont really know much of certain sections like this and most of decatur as a whole
Many years ago, where there is currently an apartment complex called the Villages of East Lake (in the East Lake neighborhood just east of Kirkwood), there was a public housing project called East Lake Meadows. During its existence, it was affectionately called "Little Vietnam". Although there were no Vietnamese at all, the name came from a comparison to the violence and depravity of Vietnam during the Vietnam war.

Similarly, although there are virtually no Mexicans,"Little Mexico" is a nickname that references Mexico's recent violence and depravity due to drug cartels, etc. However, "Little Mexico" today is not nearly as bad as "Little Vietnam" was back in the day.

I think many rappers that are from once notorious neighborhoods are sort of grasping at straws trying to maintain their street cred in areas that were once infamous, but today are rapidly gentrifying. I've seen music videos illustrating the crime, blight, drugs, and hardships of Kirkwood filmed entirely in Bixby Court Apartments (which is really just a very small pocket of apartments on less than half a block of one street) surrounded by $200k+ homes. And from what I understand is about to be torn down and replaced with luxury apartments ($$$$).

That's when Atlanta's Eastside was really bad. Crazy how much things have changed. I generally feel safe walking in most of the eastern neighborhoods.

I wonder how much the bike lanes on Hosea Williams changed the neighborhood. They're doing a similar project on Joseph E. Boone Blvd.

The entire Lil Mexico/East Atlanta rap movement is for just looks. Most of those guys are in their early to late 20's. Way too young to really have seen the days when it really was grimey over there. Coming from the westside we of course heard all the old stories about places like Eastlake but we honestly didn't respect dudes from that area because we knew that area had already turned a corner but yet the people from there tried to act like it was still a war zone. And to be honest a good number of people who claim East Atlanta really don't live the neighborhood East Atlanta itself. People from Candler Rd to Gresham Rd claim East Atlanta which kinda throws it off a little because some of those places still are somewhat turned up. I could go on forever and ever about those Eastside folks. I'll just say that some people from the Dekalb County side of the A tend to embellish the roughness of their area aand the gullible rap fans may buy it but those of us who grew up in either Zone 1, 3 or 4 know better.

Edgewood Courts is a fairly large apartment complex filled with low income people; that is all. When I taught at Coan Middle School several years ago (which was located right in front of Edgewood Courts) I did a number of home visits there. They people were poor, no joke: Mattresses on the floor, no real beds, empty refrigerators with nothing but margarine and ice, single mothers really struggling. That said, while it was not the type of place I would like to take an afternoon stroll, there were many bright children that seemed determined to succeed, too. Not exactly "gangsters' paradise" is what I guess I mean, just urban and poor.

Nice,Interesting. Thanks makes a whole lot of sense. From Little Vietnam to Little Mexico Lol,now I get the Mexico part, and I actually know of other Little Vietnams with no Vietnamese in them, due to the fact of ''internal hood wars'' also ) .
And so many areas were even more infamous in Atlanta than this little pockets. But as it seems this little pockets of this days develop stories worth writing many books in their own little world which is reflected even in the songs.

When this pockets exists, the whole mentality persists.
Yet the model of simply put them apart and displace all the ones who live in there with no consideration in the future for that specific bracket of population is just not right. We take apart the place and put a luxury condo just to fix the ''issue''?
Any new complex built in the same land, wherever that might be should force developers to include affordable housing mixed in between the private full market rate new apartments. Is kind of like the way we find a balance,an ethical balance as society and say.''Hey,we didn't forgot you guys.We reserved a slice of the pie at least''
I say re-build different, but keep them in mind.Well some of them.it shoudn't be all about money.

Affordable housing isn't always that affordable for a lot of folks.

Wonder how long it is before we start seeing the "poor door" here in Atlanta?

All the MIC that replaced the AHA projects include all brackets.
