Sounds like some of the folks in Midtown are getting pretty fired up about crime. I'm sure that is true in other areas as well.

It's a real problem in some parts of town. Almost nothing will kill a neighborhood's vibe faster than endemic crime.

P.S. I hope this thread stays civil.

I highly advised that people take gun lessons and armed themselves. You must protect yourself at all cost. I'm also noticing the majority of crimes are done by teenage kids. Henceforth if you big and dumb to violate a person private property be prepared to face the consequences.

Also when will Atlanta close those projects off Boulevard. I can't prove it, but wouldn't be shock if crimes are committed from those who hang out on the street from the area. It is technically in or near Midtown.

Nothing that we need more than a bunch of people shooting at each other. Flying bullets are bound to make it safer for children to play and to create that walking community of people on the streets that we want for Midtown. Yes, flying bullets between two parties is bound to make that better. Good thinking. I think I'd rather walk down a street with crime than a street with potential bullets flying because everyone is carrying a gun and ready to shoot.

Also, teens don't think they they will be shot or die. They don't think it can happen to them. How is arming everyone going to discourage someone who thinks they are invincible and unable to die?

How about letting the CDC do that study on gun violence instead of NRA holding it up? Let the experts study it and come up with solutions. All of these armchair cowboys's thoughts has not worked as yet.

Thank you. Yes yes and yes. Guns won't make anything safer, regardless of who is carrying them. Even a well intentioned gun owner can start a shoot out with a criminal, and a crowded midtown street is NOT the place we want that happening.

Edit: Also want to note - I say this from experience. I was held up at gunpoint in Midtown about 1 month ago. Having a gun on me would have done absolutely NOTHING in that situation, except start a gunfight in a crowded area. Since I was caught off guard, if I even had any time to reach for a gun, the criminal would have pulled his trigger first.

The CoA needs a much larger and visible police presence. You normally see police officers clustered around big events in the city, but not enough visible presence on the streets during normal days. Maybe coming from NYC which has almost become a "police state" (kinda joking), I'm used to seeing way more cops walking beats (etc), but people are visual and that perception would stop a lot of these young punks from committing these types of crimes.

There are multiple problems that need to be solved to prevent crime in this city, poverty and education being 2 of the top predictors for crime. The city needs to take care of these social issues to reduce crime in general. In the mean time, adding visible patrols on the street could be huge. Atlanta is turning into less of a car city, and therefore in areas that have high pedestrian counts, police need to also be on the sidewalk, not just driving by.

APD Zone 5

The idea that Midtown being engulfed in a crime wave is mixed. Robbery is down 10% YTD but residential burglary is up 16%. Vehicle larceny (smash and grab) is down 10% as well. Perhaps the most worrying trend is aggravated assault up 20%.

It is worrying that the multi-decade long trend of declining crime seems to have halted this year. Increased uniform patrols (and actual cops walking a beat) will decrease the rate of crime, but I'm not sure whether APD has the budget/ability to step up police activity.

My friend you are severely misinformed. The police have as much training as one can possible have, and they shoot people accidentally all the time, including other police officers. The best weapon against robbery and assault is awareness.

Who's going to pay for it!!! lol. This is one thing I do enjoy about NYC, if I was in Time Square or on 125th, there was a cop on the beat within a block or two. I didn't agree with the stop and frisk policy, but I do agree NYC does it right with cops walking beats. Atlanta should implement cops walking Peachtree from Five Points to 17th street.
