Hello, We live in south Forsyth County Georgia. Our son has ADHD, severe Executive Function Dysfunction and now no longer has Non Verbal LD but instead Learning Disabilities Tendencies from his last full Psych evaluation this summer. His intelligence is average in the low range. We pulled him out of Forsyth County's VCMS in 6th grade four years ago because the county would not give us an IEP, he was struggling academically, and he wanted to drop out of school which he had started talking about in 5th grade. Since that time we saw that he was not on grade level so we held him back a year and have had him at an awesome Hybrid Home School. He has great peer relations and the teachers say he is a leader and provides good input. However, he still struggles with deciding to give school his BEST effort, and he struggles with retention of material sometimes so his grades are all over the place but mostly in the low B, C range when he chooses to do the work... We understand that some of his issues are maturity related, but now that he is in his 8th grade year we do not know what high school will be best for him. We don't know if we could get an IEP, or if the co-taught classes or small classes in the public schools will work for our son. Regarding private schools we don't know which ones would be a right fit for him and which will provide some accommodations without having to pay extra for tutors and if he can get in... What are you thoughts and advice?
Thanks

On a side note, I have a Dyslexic daughter who performed poorly in school - both academically and socially. We finally enrolled her in a school designed specifically for Dyslexic children (Schenck, in Buckhead). She attended there for 3 years and is now back in "regular" school where she is performing academically at the top of her class and has made many great friends.

We found that the lack of confidence that accompanies Dyslexia is just as much of a challenge as the lack of academic performance. With the right Dyslexia oriented educational program, I believe you will see tremendous changes for the better in your child.

Again, best of luck!

Thanks, that is one reason why we pulled him out into a smaller classroom where I could also see what was being asked of him, evaluate his capabilities, and help out when needed. During MS though children start pulling away from their parents though to be independent. We allowed this to happen so he can see natural consequences. He battles a lot with time executive function, and retention of the material. Good thing is he has gotten some of his confidence back, so we are now looking for a good HS. We know we will need to still be involved to help him organization wise etc. Glad your daughter is doing so well!

Private school-you should talk to the Cottage School in Roswell. The Cottage School

May or may not be a fit, but they probably would be a good source of information.

Also, a diagnosis of ADHD will qualify you for an IEP.
