How do they get priority? First come, first served is about as egalitarian as you can get.

But, it shouldn't be egalitarian. It should be that a homeowner has priority. Lord, folks on here think they should have dedicated free bike lanes and free parking in front of peoples' homes. What is the world coming to? Sooner or later, folks will be asking others to pay for their stuff... Oh, wait, that's what taxes do already.

You're the one asking taxpayers to pay so you can have exclusive use of the public street in front of your house.

Just issue permits to the folks who live there and post signs saying "You will be towed if you park here without a permit."

From that point the homeowners can actually handle a good bit of the enforcement. Once they sign up with a towing company, all they need to do is give them a call and they will generally remove unpermitted vehicles promptly.

And I think that is reasonable. At least one spot. The public can use the other four or five.

Here's somebody who claims that abundant parking leads to more driving.

Quote:
In the urban planning world, a parallel to the smoking-cancer connection is the tie between parking and driving. Cheap, excessive parking has been linked to more drive-alone commutes, worse traffic congestion, higher rents, and all the other social costs of over-reliance on cars for urban mobility. But the fact that so many U.S. cities cling to minimum parking policies suggests that officials don’t see parking as a key cause of increased driving—instead, perhaps, just a natural response to it.

Have to agree with the observation. However, we need better transit so those drivers can become riders.
