So if I have 3 people in my party and we split an Uber to catch a ride to our next destination... I can't call that ride-sharing?

Of course, but that would be true with any conveyance from a hayride to an ocean liner.

That's not specific to Uber or Lyft.

Don't you get it, Uber and Lyft use buzzwords like 'ride sharing' to appear better than 'using an app to hail a private vehicle, driven by a person we have not done a background check on.'

They have certainly flummoxed the media, who apparently think they are niftiest and most modern thing ever.

I like the idea of using an app to dispatch cabs and having the payment system included. But fawning over them as some sort of revolutionary "sharing" culture is ridiculous.

That's where I have to strongly disagree with you. Yes it is in fact a new sharing culture, no Uber is not a traditional taxi at all, and yes it is an absolutely great thing, even game-changing for many people.

My favorite technological advancements of this decade have been Uber and Airbnb. Bar none.

Both have changed my life, actually. In a very positive way. In the form of much saved money, much saved stress, much added convenience, fewer worries about going out and having a few drinks, and also they've connected me to transit and to the urban parts of nice cities.

So, IMO the fawning is completely accurate, as is the media coverage. But some haters always gonna hate, I guess.

I don't hate Uber. To the contrary, the app is quite handy for summoning a car. And as I said above, it's convenient to have your credit card on file.

But let's say you go out and have a few drinks and decide to take Uber rather than driving.

Or say you use Uber to get to a transit station.

What's being shared in either of those situations?

You and your (Uber or taxi) driver?

Once again, the car.

As in, the individual who owns it is sharing use of their car with me.

Pretty simple concept.
