Story from 2012 showing TSA workers are responsible for quite a bit of theft...

The Top 20 Airports for TSA Theft - ABC News

Do a google search for TSA employees caught stealing, and there are plenty more stories even more recent than the one linked above.

Well I take that back...that's a problem. Still really has nothing to do with this particular story though.

Honestly, I feel this has more to do with Hartsfield-Jackson being the busiest airport in the country for a long period of time.

I worked at the airport for a few years when I was in college FWIW and there are issues there IMO with problem employees but nothing extraordinary IMO for an airport of its size especially.

ETA: IMO it is impressive that ATL (airport code) is not even #1 on the list (they are 4th but #1 in passengers) and MIA (Miami) is the top spot for the most thefts but 12th in number of passengers. They do an extraordinary amount of thievery in Miami lol. I would think Atlanta would be higher due to having a lot more traffic than most airports. I know O'Hare in Chicago is another that has a high amount of traffic (#2 after Atlanta) and it is impressive they are far down on the list as well. (#20 out of 20) for theft.

ATL's O&D traffic is exploding right now! It was up 10% last FY (Fed, Oct-Sept) year and is up 14% over that for the first 4-months of FY16. The growth ATL is experiencing is through local traffic, not connections. Last year, about 33% was O&D. If last year's growth rate continues. ATL will hit about 108M total pax in '16, which would be like 36M local pax. Thats Why ATL is pushing TSA so hard on wait times. They see how bad it was last year and the projections are for far more pax this year, making it even worse for the summer crunch if TSA can't improve staffing and reduce processing times. This also explains the huge traffic backups at the terminals when picking people up from returning or departing flights.

I'm sorry, the issue is incompetence. End of story.
Absolutely unacceptable. The TSA needs to shape up or ship out.

ATL's capital expenditures are 100% unrelated to the federal funds used to pay for TSA screening. Which I'm guessing you knew, but wanted to try to make a point about some supposed local mismanagement.

I flew home from Albuquerque yesterday at 6:20 a.m. I noticed two things that were very interesting:

1. They had at least twice as many TSA workers on duty at 5:15 a.m. than there were at ATL when I went through security last Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

2. There were approximately 1/10 the amount of people waiting in line at ABQ than at ATL.

Whoever is running the TSA puppet show at ATL needs to be fired.

Keep in mind that O&D grew at 10% last year with 34 million out of the 100 million that used the airport last year. I think since Delta has upgauge a lot of aircraft and Atlanta growing population we will continue to see longer lines.
