What holds Downtown back is the huge percentage of parcels we have dedicated to parking, that creates dead areas.
yep how quick we forget. I like the Hawks but this guy just got here. I dont care for his opinion until he contributes. How are people putting this guy on the level of Author Blank, Bernie Marcus, Robert Woodruff and Ted Turner? Dude win something....

"Exploding" seems like a generous term. Would love to know what they mean.

Because Midtown stole all of downtown's thunder. If Atlanta never had a "Midtown" like it's current one, downtown would be the one with 4-5k apartment units being built concurrently. Midtown effectively serves as a downtown, except safer, nicer, greener, and has a VERY nice big urban park.

I think you're right. Midtown is probably our de facto downtown.

As for the actual Downtown, it all comes down to one major obstacle, I think: Getting a decent grocery store. Doesn't need to be a Whole Foods--in fact I don't want a Whole Foods downtown just yet. Either a Kroger or a Publix would do.

Downtown's "problem" isn't how it attracts more suburbanites, it's how you get more people to live there. Despite the the parking lots and businesses that cater only to tourists or office workers (pretty much every downtown in this country), that would all be negated by a critical mass of residents. However, I would say that isn't as bleak as it may seem. 30,000 people live Downtown, and believe it or not, has one of the highest Downtown populations of any city in this country.

We just need more. Like another 70,000 residents. There's enough room for that.

Default I may be behind the curb here

But has the idea of relocating the Hawks to the site of the Civic Center ever been floated? I know the city wants to keep all its sporting teams in one spot but the Hawks may benefit from the move.
