This a thousand times. Depending where your job is located, you should definitely consider Fayette County and Coweta County (Peachtree City, Fayetteville, Tyrone, Newnan, Sharpsburg).
I haven't commuted to those towns during rush hour, but the lack of large interstates running directly to them (except for Newnan) and the uneven, non-contiguous economic development patter between them at the city of Atlanta has always made me wonder if living there is a more insular experience than in Alpharetta.

Alpharetta is not just Alpharetta. You can drive from Alpharetta all the way into the city of Atlanta or all the way into Acworth or Suwanee without realizing that you've crossed city limits.

If you need access to the Airport, you do not want to live in Alpharetta! I think many of you are being disingenuous by telling the OP there is an extensive rail system, when that rail system goes nowhere near Alpharetta. How long will it take him "door to door" to get from a home in Alpharetta to the MARTA station / and then to the airport during rush hour?

If you need access to the Airport, as a couple others mentioned, look at Peachtree City.

The real question is - how often do you travel?
