Hi. I'm trying to figure out if Atlanta is a good city to start a new live in the States. I'm in my late 20s and I'm looking for a job (retailing, customer service or NGOs), good transportation system (I'd rather not to have to get a car) and low rent (utilities included). I'd like to know if Atlanta meets my current expectations. What do you guys can tell me about it? Thanks.

Atlanta fails to meet two of your criteria:
1. Not having to get a car - Even though there is a train system, bus systems and services like Zipcar (probably RIP soon), Lyft, and Uber make it far easier to get around... Atlanta is not densely populated and there is a lot of sprawl here. Many areas are not well served by public transit. A car is a practical necessity for occasional use in my opinion. Even if only for use a couple of times per month.

2. NGOs - to my knowledge, there aren't that many NGOs in the Atlanta area.

As far as retailing or customer service, I would do as much research and make as many phone calls to hiring managers as possible to get real data on pay, job availability and job longevity. The disparity in income in this country is growing , and it seems to be growing faster in large cities.

I agree with Tarzannman that the transport communication is not good developed in Atlanta so far.

Speaking about the cost of living, the average monthly rent is $970. However, it depends on the part of the city you want to live in. If you prefer the city center, than you'll pay in the range of $1,000- $1,500 for one bedroom apartment. If you have a fixed budget and looking for apt closer to suburbs, you can get the rental aproximately for $870.

As for the weather is hard to say. Some people complain about hot summer, but other still think that it's one of the biggest advantages that Atlanta has.

Do you enjoy having all of the cons of a big city but none of the benefits? Then Atlanta has something for you!
