Timely question if possible.
A man served as a "circuit pastor" in 1940 for The Social Circle.

The Covington Library only knows of the small town Social Circle, Ga.

With Covington being larger than Social Circle we wonder if "The Social Circle" was not the town itself but.........

Thanks.

Good question.

We have kinfolk from Social Circle and I have always wondered how it got its name. I doubt that there was anything like the "Social Register" that existed in larger cities, since it was still a small farming community when it was named.

You have no doubt seen this on the city's website.

Thanks for that link.

From a distant relative "The Social Circle" was the town. There may have been a group of pastors who went on the ministry circuit (out of Social Circle, Ga.) to small towns across the state and to reach residents in rural areas of NE Georgia.

That is possible.

Circuit riding preachers were fairly common before we became so mobile. The practice continued on a limited basis up until recent times -- we know a fellow who was a circuit rider up into the 1980s. And of course there are still plenty of traveling evangelists.

A circuit preacher delivered my grandfather in 1896 in rural south Georgia. My great grandparents named my grand dad after the preacher. My dad and I have the same name.

Funny you brought that up. My cousins descended from four generations of circuit clergy. The first one came here from Virginia; he was born illegitimate in 1771. No doubt the stigma attached to that prompted his decision to head for the north Georgia wilderness. His great-grandson was much beloved on his circuit and over 30 years had any number of boys named for him in the Bulloch County area.

My boyfriend's great-great-grandfather was a circuit preacher sent out by the Methodist Episcopal Church to establish new churches in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. He would establish a church and then move on to the next one.

Unfortunately, that meant that during the Civil War, he had to frequently cross borders and ended up getting arrested as a spy more than once. Luckily, once they realized he was just a preacher, they'd let him go.
