If anyone hasn't been in downtown Alpharetta in the past 2 years, it has changed dramatically, the catalyst being the construction of the new city center which began a couple of years ago. So far, the new construction has mostly been on vacant lots or in replacement of newer buildings, but now Mayfair Street Partners is trying to demolish three historic properties and replace it with a 5-story "boutique hotel".

The sick irony is that they are naming it the "Cotton House Hotel" after one of the historic buildings they are planning on destroying- built in 1901 as the Webb-Guano House. The two other buildings were built as "dime stores" shortly after and date back to the era when Alpharetta was a "mountain town" far removed from metro Atlanta. The new hotel, if built, would be five stories, larger than any building in Downtown Alpharetta.

Step one of the approval process has already gone through. It's insane adding to the already horrific traffic in that area, not to mention the loss of the historic buildings.

I like Downtown Alpharetta a lot. They should keep building up like this, make it like Marietta.

The new building will be a much better fit. We can't expect the developer to incorporate the Cotton House and the two single family homes into the bottom of their hotel. They aren't worth saving. Almost all of the other buildings in downtown Alpharetta are nice two story brick buildings. Single family homes aren't dense enough for that location.

Thanks for posting the pics, caused me to sway my opinion 180 degrees. Just because it's old doesn't mean it had any architectural character worth saving.
