My friend asked me about this and I wasn't sure if I am understanding what I found online. If you forget to renew your registration, do you really have to pay a 10% ad valorem tax penalty? Assuming when you bought the car you paid the ad valorem tax, is it saying online that you would be subject to a 10 per cent fee depending on the current value of your car? Like let's say it's worth 20,000, would the person really have to pay a 2000 late penalty plus the 5 dollar late fee they mention? I might just call them tomorrow but thought I might get an answer on this forum before tomorrow morning. There is often a long hold time. I just can't believe that after buying a car and paying the TAVT tax, you would have to pay another one as a late penalty. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

Forgot to respond. I think the 10% thing is for people who haven't paid the TAVT tax yet. Shouldn't affect you if you already paid.

I got to thinking, surely the penalty is on the tax, not the value of the car. $200 tax, $20 penalty.

It's just the $5 late fee.

From my understanding, no. Ive had my car in the shop (unable to get emissions) during registration dates and I only had to pay an extra $5
