It's a huge mistake to get rid of the program at all - we already have a shortage in many areas of public service, such as teachers. In many states you NEED a masters to teach, and really, the big loans are those people who have graduate degrees, especially Masters. One day, people will really see just how much we rely on public servants if programs like this go away and the cost of getting an education continually sky rockets.

Thank you for providing the specifics. Yes, it is a huge mistake. I guess I know I'll definitely be going private as there is now zero incentive to join public. I know public usually gets better holiday and maybe other better benefits but it won't be enough to counter the huge loan I will have.

That's crazy that states are requiring masters when teachers don't get master's level pay and master's level respect. Yes, people will see how much we rely on public servants!!

Even the "better benefits" advantage is fading. I worked in the public sector and many co-workers were on their spouse's health insurance because the coverage/cost in the spouse's private sector employer plan was better.

Wow! That was all they had was the better benefits. Not sure who will go to public especially with loan forgiveness going away. I mean even the person who posted I think 120 payments. Really?!?!? If that's for 10 years I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Yes, 10 years of payments. I'm pretty sure without PSLF, I'd making payments until I was dead, so I'll take 10 years!
