A strong police presence for the upcoming Super Bowl in Atlanta is likely to result in the arrest of more homeless people, say social service advocates who are pushing for officials to open a daytime diversion center for those with nowhere to go.

The need for such a center transcends the Super Bowl, the advocates say, but that event increases the urgency — especially with the closure of the Central Atlanta library, where many homeless residents spent days on computers or just away from the elements.

The vision for the center is twofold, both as a place where homeless people feel comfortable hanging out and a place where they can be connected with mental health, housing and other resources. It would remain open long after the big game is over..."

Seems like a good idea to me.

Interesting. I was not previously familiar with the term "daytime diversion center." I live in Summerhill and was hoping the Fanplex would be renovated for use, but this was not exactly what I had in mind. I'm actually somewhat surprised what with the Georgia Ave project and all that's being built in Summerhill - a center for the homeless seems like a bad idea.

Everyone wants to help the homeless, until they propose a shelter in their neighborhood.

Shouldn't a place like this be in a more centralized location?

Sure can't disagree with that. But who would want a shelter in their neighborhood? Especially if its one that's currently (and finally after years and years) on the UP.

Anyone who wants to legitimately help solve homelessness.

Seriously, would be nice if there was a soup kitchen and shelter in several intown Atlanta neighborhoods that are relatively walkable to the urban core.

That doesn't seem controversial to me. Feeling bad for a group and wanting to help them doesn't meant wanting to have them in their backyard bringing the problems/drop in home values with it. It's ridiculous to assume you have to want homeless people next door if you really want to help them.
