After nearly 24 years in office, Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway has announced that he will not seek re-election to a 7th term in office.

At nearly 24 years and in his 6th term in office, Conway is the longest-serving sheriff in Gwinnett County's history.

After first being elected to the office in 1996, Sheriff Conway has run basically unopposed in each general election since, but was slated to face a Democratic opponent in November for the first time in 24 years.

Gwinnett Chief Deputy Lou Solis has received Conway's endorsement for Sheriff and is expected to succeed Conway as the Republican nominee for Sheriff in November, where he will face one of five possible Democratic opponents in the general election.

From the Gwinnett Daily Post:
Quote:
Butch Conway announced Tuesday he will not seek re-election after 24 years as sheriff of Gwinnett County.

Conway, a Republican, was Gwinnett County’s longest-tenured sheriff. He was first elected to the post as a Republican in 1996 and was continually re-elected after that. There had been uncertainty for months, however, as to whether he would seek re-election this year.

Default Gwinnett County elects first Black sheriff in its history

Much like dominant Northwest metro Atlanta suburb Cobb County has elected the first black sheriff in its history, dominant Northeast metro Atlanta suburb Gwinnett County has also elected the first black sheriff in its history.

Quote:
Keybo Taylor, the Democratic Party candidate, defeated Chief Deputy Lou Solis — who was [retiring incumbent Sheriff Butch] Conway's handpicked preferred successor — with 226,026 votes, or 57.21% of the votes cast in the race, according to unofficial results.

Taylor's swearing in ceremony was original supposed to take place in December, but it was postponed until this weekend after he tested positive for COVID-19 right before Christmas.

The event on Saturday was about celebrating the start of Taylor's history-making tenure as sheriff. Taylor is one of eight African-American sheriffs currently serving in metro Atlanta counties.

Immediately after being appointed Chief Deputy of the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 1, Cleophas Atwater turned his focus to securing the safety of Gwinnett’s children and other vulnerable populations.

Atwater said the sheriff’s office is still in the process of identifying certain equipment and technology to build the infrastructure to fight human trafficking and gang issues in the community. However, he hopes they’ll be fully functional and able to present cases for prosecution within months.
