Well, while tragic and unfortunate, the crime that you linked above happened in August 2023 at 2am on Spring Street between 3rd & 4th streets between two individuals. There’s nothing open around that area at that time. So I don’t think this is just a random occurrence.

With that said, unless I’m in a completely residential neighborhood, I really wouldn’t be hanging out by myself on one of the least residential blocks of Midtown Atlanta at 2am in the morning. Not to make light of this situation, but this story doesn’t make me scared of Midtown. I wouldn’t see whatever happened between these individuals as a predictor of what would happen to me because I couldn’t see myself hanging out at 2am on a desolate block of Midtown Atlanta by myself.

And as for the local news, remember, if it bleeds, it leads. Again, I’m by no means saying crime doesn’t exist, but I do believe it is presented in such a way that an outsider would think all of Atlanta is like the lawless Wild West, rife with danger at every turn — but this is not the case at all.

Agreed. I've been a homeowner in Midtown for almost 5 years. I never felt unsafe. Also, almost all of the crime that happens in Midtown is caused by individuals that don't actually live in Midtown, or in the city proper for that matter (I think it was Midtown Alliance that released that data this past year).

Yea there really isn't as much nightlife in ATL as some non-residents think. Edgewood is ok-ish but not major compared to many other city's nightlife areas. ATL can be pretty boring if nightlife is someone's thing (been living in the city proper for 12 years).

Atlanta’s nightlife is decidedly mediocre (well, among the Black community there could be a way different perception).

But the thing I can’t put my finger on is why Atlanta is such an exceptionally good day-drinking city. From Park Tavern all the way to 97 Estoria, it’s like the entire built environment was designed for an epic Sunday Funday.

I was in Savannah awhile back and their downtown was absolutely popping. New Orleans vibes. People packed everywhere leaving bars, chilling by the riverfront, partying on the street, enjoying time at the park (Orleans Square i think?), it was a vibe. The only part of Atlanta that could compare to that vibrancy wise is the eastside beltline on the weekends. Really just made me think we could bring that energy to Atlanta, rather that be midtown, downtown, or buckhead.

Yeah Atlanta got the brunch vibes on lock...There's this new spot downtown called Breakfast on barneys which is amazing

There was also the high profile incident of the mass shooting incident in the medical clinic in the spring during which businesses in the area had to lock down and shelter in place that afternoon. But as we see on the news those type of incidents can happen anywhere, even small peaceful towns. People like to paint a negative image of ATL being a "ghetto city".

Especially on the Eastside Beltline area such as New Realm Brewery and similar spots. Overall though many people like to go up to Nashville to experience true nightlife.

I like the West Midtown Area; it reminds me of DC.

Indeed. Yeah I was walking on Peachtree St a bit yesterday. Saw some of the new buildings going up. Also saw the Campanile building getting redone. Interesting project.

I’ll give my full report of thoughts after I get back. Atlanta is the city that is so close to being what it could be.

That building has been getting a redo for the past like 10 years LMAO. I bought my place in Midtown almost 5 years ago and that building has been torn apart ever since LOL.
