He's only doing this now because he's actual friends with John McCain and the media has reported that he's met up with him more than once - he wants to be the one picked as McCain's V.P. candidate. Unlikely perhaps even with their friendship, but still, he realizes that some of his past decisions aren't exactly "electable" ones, and he's doing a back flip now as a result.
A couple of years ago the news sites quoted him as basically coming right out saying he wasn't going to budget anything at all for ANY mass transit projects. 11alive used to have that article online until recently but it's now gone from their server - maybe someone else can find it.
A bit before that, he killed some commuter rail plants laid in by the previous Governor (see article
HERE).
In other words I think Perdue doesn't give a rat's ass about transit today any more than he did a couple of years ago, but it's politically correct to be in support of it now, and he thinks he'll earn brownie points for taking this born-again stance on it (and he thinks people have forgotten his opposition to it in the past).
Hey, as long as some of these projects get built I don't care what his reasons are, but if he runs for V.P. you can bet I'll be one of the first to show America how he took the time to legalize some types of fireworks here, but didn't care about transit until it looked like it could politically benefit his career.
