I'm traveling to the Hartsfield Atlanta Airport on July the 20th to pick up my fiance. I've never driven to Atlanta, and I don't have a ton of big-city driving experience (grew up in a town of less than 5k). I will be traveling from south of Knoxville. I planned on taking US-411 down into Georgia, then catching I-75 for the last 40 miles or so. I'll then take the I-285 bypass W to I-285, then get off on Camp Creek. I think that way I'll miss most of the construction north of Atlanta on I-75. Thoughts? Any advice for handling the traffic? The travel day is a Sunday, so will the traffic be better on that day? I'll leave knoxville around 11-12, and her flight arrives at 4:30 or so, so that will be my time frame for driving.

Any advice, comments, etc for handling traffic/travel/getting to airport would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you are uncomfortable driving in the city then that route would be a good one. The construction on 75 could be an issue as well- it's tough to really know how bad on the weekends. So, stick with your route. You won't have any issue with traffic (I'm knocking on wood for you) on a Sunday barring some outrageous wreck.

Go Vols?

Skip 411 and stay on I-75 the entire way, much faster. Taking I-285 is good.

I've driven thru Knoxville many dozens of times, and its freeway traffic is as bad as anywhere, so I wouldn't worry about your abilities.

Why not take I-75 all the way? Seems like it would be so much faster. It would usually take me right at three hours to make that trip.

My reasoning for taking 411 was because mapquest showed construction on I-75 north of Atlanta. Thought maybe taking 411 would be easier and I would miss the traffic. Still think it would be better to take 75 the entire way?

Yes, and on a Sunday you won't have congestion through Chattanooga.
But I do think you're right to do I-285 W to Camp Creek when you get here.

Right. On no account consider staying on I-75 through downtown (perhaps thinking of enjoying the city views). They're repaving the downtown connector on weekends and it can be absolutely nightmarish. I-285 W to Camp Creek is a better route most of the time anyway, and during the repaving that's especially true.
